If you have the psychological endurance to resist depression, you will see

Indeed, as others have said, when you watch this film, you can follow the protagonist's experience into the play. Fully feel the depression inside the U-boat. Time and time again they face depth charges, lack of supplies, lack of sunlight, and even lack of fresh air. Allied ships were also hunted under such conditions. Submarine officers and soldiers are superhumans with strong willpower.

The time of the story should be at the stage when the Allies have discovered that submarines can be detected with radar and have enabled aircraft for anti-submarine warfare. If World War 2 was to start, the unrestricted submarine warfare would almost force the UK to surrender. That's the real Happy Times.

Das Boot quotes

  • Captain of the 'Weser': So, what's it like down there, in a submarine?

    Der Leitende: It's... quiet.

Captain of the 'Weser': Quiet? Hmm.

  • [Werner takes pictures of the watch officers on the conning tower]

Captain: Take pictures of the crew returning, not putting out to sea.

    Lt. Werner: Why?

Captain: They'll have grown beards by then. It would shame the Tommies to see mere boys give them Hell. Baby faces. Ones that should still suck mama's breast.

    [pause]

Captain: I feel ancient around these kids, like I'm on some Children's Crusade.
