Indeed, as others have said, when you watch this film, you can follow the protagonist's experience into the play. Fully feel the depression inside the U-boat. Time and time again they face depth charges, lack of supplies, lack of sunlight, and even lack of fresh air. Allied ships were also hunted under such conditions. Submarine officers and soldiers are superhumans with strong willpower.
The time of the story should be at the stage when the Allies have discovered that submarines can be detected with radar and have enabled aircraft for anti-submarine warfare. If World War 2 was to start, the unrestricted submarine warfare would almost force the UK to surrender. That's the real Happy Times.
