In fact, I really hate this kind of movie, because I always feel that it is not enough storytelling. It wants to express a feeling. If it is a person who does not resonate with this feeling, it will feel boring to watch.
This kind of film is somewhere between a story film and a documentary, and even if it is boring, it is easy to get a high score. Such as "Dunkirk", "Pentium Age" and "Hugo".
My evaluation of such films is almost harsh, because I feel that they are not good enough, their information and historical sense are not as good as documentaries, their storytelling is not as good as story films, and they are not close to the shore. I think the only well-made one in this kind of movie is "Forrest Gump". (Paul Thomas Anderson's work is also in this genre, but I'll give him both the best and the worst.)
But so many people like this style of things, it seems that they need to be studied... If I shoot this kind of thing, I may give it some innovation in form. The usual practice of this kind of movie is to disguise it as a story movie, but in fact its story is not strong, its strengths are feelings and thick, so it should make use of its strengths and avoid weaknesses. (If you have the talent of "Forrest Gump", it is another matter.) For example, it may be a good idea to extremeize the music and art to make it appear more artistic. (Like what The Wall did.)
