Unlike ordinary horror movies, there is no scary music, and most of the scenes are all nights in the Nordic summer, sunshine, garlands, and beautiful girls.
But after reading it is uncomfortable, even. . . Kind of disgusting.
The director's debut in 2018, "Hereditary Doom", is the same, and it feels more terrifying when you think about it carefully.
Both films are inherently fragile relationships. The family in "Hereditary Doom" and the couple in "Midsummer Night" are already full of rifts, and when they are teetering, cults take advantage. So love must be firm.
There are a lot of pictures and symbols in the film, so I recorded some that I noticed.
A mural at the beginning of the film basically covers the main content of the film. On the far left, the cold-colored section is the one in which the heroine's sister kills her parents and commits suicide; the second is Pelle persuading the heroine to take part in a tour of Sweden; the crowd enters the Sun Gate; and the last is the dance under the Maypole. The sun in the upper right corner is smiling wickedly.
A few friends at a bar. Christian is the heroine's boyfriend, but at this time he is already thinking of breaking up. In the photo on the wall, it is the famous Italian actress Sophia Roland. The incident was with the American supermodel Jayne Mansfield.
The little girl and the bear in the master bedroom is the work of Swedish artist John Bauer, called "Stackars Basse". John Bauer is known for his creations based on Swedish folklore and mythological figures.
This series of shots before entering the village, upside down, will cause dizziness if you look closely. Foreshadows the imminent entry into a different world.
Before seeing the female leader, Christian watched the painting on the wall while waiting, which was a harbinger of his own final fate.
The skinning that Mark endured, and the execution of Simon's blood eagle, are not specific in the film, but the few scenes shown are enough to make the scalp tingle.
Mirrors are the main props in horror movies. There are also applications in the back, such as Josh candidly filming a scene in the holy book, and also saw the stalking person from the reflection in the window.
This kind of putting two people talking to each other into the same picture through a mirror has been seen more often recently.
The framed picture on the refrigerator is Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz (1939), Scarecrow afraid of fire. The men in the last group were all burned and sacrificed.
As the main characters of this film, Dani and Christian have no lines in the last 25 minutes, except for screaming; as a couple, there is no kiss in the whole film, but there are scenes such as forgetting birthdays and neglecting.
There are a lot of "nine" in the film. The 90-year festival lasts for nine days and sacrifices nine people. A person's life is divided into four seasons according to the age groups of 18, 36, 54, and 72, and so on. The importance of nine comes from the old myth of Odin, the father of the Norse gods who hanged upside down at Yggdrasil for nine days. Yggdrasil is the tree of wisdom in the world, and created languages such as Futhark, Runes, the latter being the Rune language mentioned in the film.
Director Ali Astor's two films, "Hereditary" and "A Midsummer Nightmare," have in common: smashed faces, cults, naked old people, and explorations of grief and relationships.
