The male protagonist who voluntarily guarded the frontier found that the barracks was empty when he went to the frontier. He was guarding the frontier alone, but he didn’t accidentally find the Indians. The Indians rescued and lived with him, and became the translator of the male protagonist. The latter two got married. The male protagonist was regarded as a traitor by the incoming US military and was rescued by the Indians. , the male protagonist had to leave with his wife, but the US military who arrived later did not find the tribe, and the tribe had actually left quietly.

Ten Bears: [in Lakota; subtitled] Quiet! You are all hurting my ears! Leave us!
[all the Sioux file out of the tent, and within seconds Ten Bears and Dunbar are alone]
Ten Bears: [in Lakota to Dunbar; subtitled] You are the only white man I have ever known. I have thought about you a lot. More than you think. And I understand your concern. But I think you are wrong. The white man the soldiers are looking for no longer exists. Now there is only a Sioux named Dances with Wolves.
