24 hours in a man's life

I have always been fascinated by Zweig's words: "I broke into my own destiny, as if I fell into an abyss.
" At the beginning of "Single Man", it was a man's body floating and sinking underwater. This kind of suffocation and sadness surrounded by addiction runs through the whole movie.

The story takes place in the sixties-an age that is too beautiful to lose its sense of reality. All the thrills are carefully wrapped in exquisite makeup and elegant clothes.

George's black-rimmed glasses, suit and leather shoes, meticulous, standard middle-aged scholar image, living in a glass room that is quite incompatible with the atmosphere of that era.
George is a single man, this is 24 hours of his life. More precisely, it is the last 24 hours of life.
Eight months ago, his gay man Jim died suddenly in a car accident. The 16 years of staying together was just a moment of negligence, and the eight months of losing the love was unbearably long. So on this day eight months later, he decided to end his life and never wake up again.

The pictures of clocks and watches constantly flash in the film, reminding the passing of this last day from time to time. Eight months ago, George's fear of time might lie in aging. Facing his young teenage lover, he only admitted that he was an "old man" when he was greedy for convenience. Eight months later, George's fear of time has turned into loneliness, his lover is gone forever, and the maintenance of life has become so mechanical and at a loss.

George organized his last day in an orderly manner: buying the bullets, leaving money for the maid, taking out the asset documents from the bank, and placing them neatly, even not forgetting his last words that he must tie a Windsor knot to his tie. Everything seems to be proceeding according to his arrangements.

However, the time of death was approaching, and the world around him was vague and unconscious, but at the last moment began to show a strange color, and with all kinds of inadvertent teases, he made the last stay on George.
On the lips of the female secretary’s sweet smile, on the naked body of the tennis man, between the misty lips of the Spanish man who strikes up a conversation, and in the bright blond eyes of the student Kenny who admires him... the film will suddenly appear in many moments. From the cold and bleak tone, to the rich and gorgeous life full of breath. At the last moment, the life cause began to bloom with the beauty that has been neglected for a long time.

"My life is attached to these moments, and they pull me back to the present."
When George finally jumped out of the water and took a big breath, the heart that had been broken so many times gave up the struggle. With the last tick of the second hand, everything came to an abrupt end.
Death is nowhere to go. Dead, no time is right. This kind of death shows the fateful love and the depth of life more than swallowing a gun and killing oneself.
But at least, this time he can stay with his lover forever.

****** When

watching "Single Man", I occasionally think of Wong Kar-wai: fascination with time, the ultimate expression of color, exquisite and beautiful pictures, soothing lyrical soundtrack... There is also George and the man who strikes up with a cigarette lighter. The blurred picture suddenly reminded me of "Happy Together".

Looking at the information afterwards, Tom Ford was generous and frank, saying that this film was greatly influenced by Wong Kar-wai, especially "In the Mood for Love".

Although I didn't know anything about Tom Ford before, I always feel that even with the original work of Christopher Isherwood, even with the subtle influence of Wong Kar Wai, the brand of this movie must belong to Tom Ford. Perhaps out of a certain prejudice of my own, I always feel that fashion is a kind of self-proclaimed beauty, so I began to have some doubts about this film debut of the fashion industry. As a result, the unpopularity of the film style did not exceed my expectations, and the affection and purity of the film itself surprised me by surprise.

The story space of the whole movie is extremely narrow, but in many moments it goes deep down. The deep affection and the loneliness left behind are expanded and magnified at such a moment, slowly chewing out helpless sadness. It's like this for showing eternity in a short period of time, and approaching infinity in a confinement.

Colin Firth gave a perfect performance in his third gay role (if I'm not mistaken). The act of receiving the bad news about her boyfriend was shocking, and it made people burst into tears.

Nicholas Hoult, the kid who made fun of Hugh Grant in "Single Parents", has grown into a beauty with electric eyes. Kenny and his fluffy white sweater are full of different freshness and youth. Being carefully cherished and admired by such a child, how can George not have a life to love...

******

Finally , Write down a tidbit you like:
Tom Ford once showed the original work to his boyfriend, but he fell asleep after seeing it;
later, Tom Ford showed him the manuscript of the first version of the script he wrote, and he fell asleep again Finished...
So Tom Ford began to rethink and understand the relationship between movies and novels.
Later, he showed the final script to his boyfriend. This time he finished reading and cried loudly.
Tom Ford knew that "I finally passed that threshold."
