The narrative of the story is very strong, and it has the power to depict the dark side of society, the incompatibility of classes, and the social discrimination against deformed people. But I have to say that the creation of the script is still biased towards fairy tale beauty. It was the male protagonist who was poor from the beginning but insisted on his dream, and the female protagonist who fell in love with the upper class, and got together without too many obstacles. And even though their lives are still poor, they are still full of joy and beauty. The twin daughters' birthdays are celebrated on the rooftop with fantastic colored lights, hoping for dreams that they don't know when they will come true.
In fact, this beginning already hints at the tone of the whole story, which is gentle and beautiful, positive and positive.
There are not too many setbacks or obstacles, one obstacle will be overcome quickly, everything is the protagonist in the self-inner growth process, contradictions, wandering, struggle, the struggle between desire and reason.
From the original intention with passion and vision, to losing myself in the process of chasing fame, wealth and material, feeling that status and money can dominate everything in front of me, and finally to the sudden awakening of the world and a change of heart. Everything is so natural and reasonable, but it does lose some unexpected surprises and fun.
The theme of the whole film gets a sublimation at the end, when the family leaves, the circus is destroyed by fire, and the former partner is driven away by his own gradual snobbery. He sat alone at the bar, depressed. And the freaks of the circus at the moment came back to him and told him that he gave them a home.
And the newspaperman, who never agreed with what he did, told him side by side in front of the burned wreckage that although he was grandstanding and deceived the audience, he did indeed bring joy to the world. People of different genders, heights, and levels of people come together and give them a place to belong, a warm home, where they can realize their value and let them see the meaning of their existence, which is widely called "Praise of Humanity".
However, the film did not expand the stories of these core characters, which is a pity, because the bearded girls, dwarfs, albino girls, etc. in the circus are actually worthy of being depicted in a three-dimensional manner, including Their tragic experience and the change in their mentality after joining, because this part can touch the softest part of people's heart. Unfortunately, it came to an abrupt end.
Original music, singing and dancing promote the development of the plot, which is the biggest feature and highlight of this film. And the best part is that it is not just for singing, all the lyrics cover the changes in the characters' thoughts, behaviors and words, and are in line with the mood and situation at the time.
From the very beginning, the male protagonist sang freely and proudly in the circus. This was his dream, maybe it was a dream, but being able to clearly feel this kind of joy was his original intention in the deepest heart. After the hero and heroine were together, they danced briskly on the roof, full of longing and happiness, and the collision of emotions was harmoniously integrated with the night scene of the rooftop and the fluttering white cloth.
I have to say that the scene that attracted me the most was when the hero persuaded the supporting actor to join the circus and competed against each other in the bar. All the rhythms of this song and dance completely represent the emotional ups and downs of the characters. The two of them sang duet in the foreground, saw each other, and they were evenly matched. You came and I went back and forth. The bartender in the background bar followed the rhythm of pouring drinks, and the cleaners were wiping the floor. Only a few people and a few actions and a few props can fully present the collision between the reality and the ideal that this scene wants to express. Each of their interactions is carefully arranged, and it is also in line with the character's current identity, situation and mood. And there is a very high degree of fit between the actions of the only 4 people, all of which will make people pleasing to the eye, and have no time to take into account the passage of time.
There is also the scene where the supporting actor and the supporting actress talk to each other, combined with the trapeze acrobatics we often see in circuses, but it is more real, and the action makes people feel more dangerous.
