When he retreated for the last time, Li Mubai reached a situation he had never touched before and had never been directed by his master. He couldn't see the path of cultivation that stretched forward, and he couldn't go any further.
So, at the beginning of the movie, Li Mubai stopped the retreat and went down the mountain to find Yu Xiulian. He is concerned about the world, and he knows it; the wall he touched in the retreat made him terrified, and he needed to leave for a while to find the courage to face it in the world. Li Mubai still didn't know where that courage should come from.

Li Mubai's mood in the bamboo forest is "disturbed", because he has a longing in his heart and does not know it.
He thought that he wanted to accept Yu Jiaolong as his disciple, in order to inherit Wudang's swordsmanship, guide her on the right path, and prevent her from going into trouble.
However, it was himself who really longed for Yu Jiaolong. Li Mubai saw his original self in Yu Jiaolong. There were still so many levels that he had not yet passed, and there were still many steps ahead. He could walk slowly, and every step was a joy.
As a teacher, the students see you as a mountain, and you see the students as walkers. To be a master is to re-experience the joy of progressing step by step from the perspective of students.
Avenging the master is a responsibility, which can remind Li Mubai: You are Jiang Nanhe's disciple, and you have something to do. Li Mubai wanted Yu Jiaolong to worship him as a teacher, but also wanted a responsibility: you are a master, and you have something to do.
There are several complaints from Li Mubai in the movie: I originally wanted to live a quiet life, but as a result, so many right and wrong are involved. It's really just an opportunity to escape.

In the cave, when Yu Jiaolong threw himself into Li Mubai's arms, he realized his desire for Yu Jiaolong. He suddenly realized that he wanted to accept Yu Jiaolong as his apprentice, not for the sake of the common people, but for his own selfish desires.
During this hesitation, Li Mubai was shot by the blue-eyed fox. Facing Yu Jiaolong, he saw his inner demon, and his eyes wandered.
What did Li Mubai think about during the two hours of sitting quietly and holding his breath?
Li Mubai probably hadn't faced a challenge for a long time, let alone death itself. He is too powerful, no one fights with him, and when he hears his name, he flinches; occasionally asking him to do something and hold justice is also respectful.
When people have nothing, it is difficult to see everything, and they need to face challenges from time to time. There is very little baggage on the body, and in difficult times, you will think "the big deal". For example, when Yang Guo was young, he would always say, "Hey, I don't give a fuck, what do you do with me!"
We always say "reconcile with the world", but in fact, you become valuable to the world, the world recognizes you, and we use the donkey to live a peaceful life. After all, living in combat mode is tiring.

But as if it wasn't enough, those worldly grievances always haunted him. How can he get back the arrogance of "killing a person with one step, leaving a thousand miles behind" when he was young?
This is why Li Mubai is fascinated by Yu Jiaolong.
When meditating in the cave, for the first time, he faced his own demons, and he was enlightened. Only then did I have the heart to face Yu Xiulian, confess my heart, and say goodbye.

Back at the beginning of the movie, Li Mubai said, "I was surrounded by a sadness of annihilation, which exceeded the limit I could bear."

He once said, "There is no eternity in what we can touch". Many people insist on practicing because they know that "colored clouds are easy to disperse and glazed glass is brittle", and they seek Tao and self-cultivation in order to let "Dao" make themselves eternal, at least a few hundred years longer.
The fear of death awakened Li Mubai, and he finally understood why he was afraid to go on.
Because there is no eternity in the world, the end of the road is just the end of the road.
At the end of the road, no feathers become immortals, no angels sing praises. He opened his eyes and saw his lover who had spent his whole life for him. She's old, and he hasn't even said he loves her.
I'm just a mortal, I can't become an immortal. And the greatest thing I can do is love you.
