The truest sorrow and hope

In my personal concept, there are two types of good movies, unrestrained imagination and shocking reality. This time the Americans made a sincere and sincere "European film". The director used trivial life fragments and flashbacks to put together an image of walking alone with sadness and sadness. Without a similar experience, I can't imagine who could have written such a real script.

(1) The most real sadness

Lee is a repairman. He lives in the basement, earns the minimum wage, and is responsible for the property services of the four buildings. He also does work outside his duties. By default, the boss takes away the remuneration that belongs to him. Every day, such as taking out the garbage, sweeping snow, flushing the toilet, repairing the water pipe, and negotiating with various homeowners, day by day, over and over again. He was taciturn, cold, distant, irritable, and alive.

The director used flashbacks to explain the reasons for his living situation. One of his negligence turned into a disaster. He burned his three children to death, and his wife left him heartbroken. There is no obvious difference between the past shots used by the director and the present ones, as if the shots are saying that Lee has never stepped out of the shadows, the past and the present coexist, and life and sorrow go together.
On an ordinary day, he received a phone call that his brother had passed away suddenly, and another close relative had left. He was not shocked, did not cry, but was angry with the car in front of him, and he rushed to Manchester by the sea Special, ask my brother's friends about the situation, see the doctor, say goodbye to the body, and deal with the funeral one by one. It's always good to have something to deal with, at least not just thinking about the fact that you've lost a loved one.
Grief isn't as piercing for as long as we once thought, it's more of a fit and a sense of overwhelm. Emotions turn into weird time bombs, irritability, finding faults, sometimes the brain suddenly goes blank, speaking speed is fast and slow, dazed, forgetful, emotions are mixed with memory occasionally triggering, sadness exists in various forms you did not expect, and even becomes A part of you that goes with you, a day, a year, a few years, you don't know how long it will last, just go on living.
At first, I felt at a loss when communicating with people. When I mentioned a deceased close relative, I didn’t know how to express it. It felt strange whether it was light or heavy. Don't want to mention it, but everyone is mentioning it to you again. In fact, there is no real sadness to talk about, and I don't want to talk about it with anyone, anyone.

Patrick had known for a long time that his father had this disease and was mentally prepared, but when death did come suddenly, he was still overwhelmed. It was explained at the very beginning of the film that Patrick's favorite person is his father. It's not that he's heartless, he's actually quite sensitive. The pain is there, along with the beauty in the memory, it stops there. This 16-year-old child doesn't know how to deal with the tragedy, doesn't know how to deal with the sadness, and doesn't want to pretend to be sad. He lives as usual, he wants to find something to do.
Asked if he wanted to see his father's body, Patrick said he didn't know. When he saw his father's icy body, he knew it, and he didn't want to face it. Glancing at the door, he turned and left, "Okay, push it back." Unable to bear, he chose to escape.
He lives as usual, going to practice ice hockey, seeing friends, dating girlfriends, and participating in bands. He can still laugh and laugh. Nothing in his life has changed, except that he is missing a close relative.
Like when his father was still alive, he asked his uncles and friends if they could stay overnight, and he didn't know why.
He didn't want to sell Dad's boat, he didn't know why, he just wanted to keep it.
He didn't want to put his father's body in the freezer for the whole winter. He didn't know if there was a soul in this world, but he just felt it was wrong and he was worried. One day, when he saw the frozen chicken in the refrigerator, he suddenly collapsed.
Whether you avoid it or not, grief is lurking in your consciousness. Lee kicks the door in, worried about his nephew, telling him he must leave the door open and not be left alone when he's down.
Sadness is the same as happiness, it starts and ends abruptly, and no emotion is infinite. However, the longevity of happiness lies in the fact that people spend their whole lives to pursue it, and the longevity of sadness lies in the fact that people try their best to avoid it. But the truth is, we have to carry them both in our lives, yearning for happiness and tormented by sadness.

(2) Life is too light and heavy

Life is always calm on the surface, with turbulent undercurrents, just like the sea in Manchester. In the face of fate, we are powerless. Life is so light, and if anyone dies, life will still work; life is so heavy that it is meaningless without concern.
Lee used to have a happy family, a loving wife and three lovely children. He never learned to cherish it, and he has completely lost it.
At the police station, Lee explained everything. That day, he and his friends drank alcohol and took medicine. It was too cold in the house. He was afraid that his family would freeze. , making a big mistake. He waited for punishment, but the law did not punish him, and he punished himself. After the attempted suicide, he lived like a dead body, he refused warmth and alienated all women who had a good opinion of him. It would seem shameful to be happy again, and it would add to a guilt that he would rather stop at. He couldn't let the lives of his three children be light enough to leave no trace. Perhaps the guilt and self-suffering made him feel more at ease and calm.
The most tear-jerking scene was when Lee ran into his ex-wife, and his ex-wife begged Lee for forgiveness. At that time, she was heartbroken and said too many hurtful things. She forgot that Lee was just as heartbroken as herself. I'm sorry, saying I still love you, Lee tried his best to restrain himself, but in the end he couldn't even utter a complete sentence and ran away in a hurry.

When mistakes happen, they happen, just like words that hurt people, hurt is hurt.

(3) Spring comes after the harsh winter.

When fate takes everything from you and you feel meaningless, it is easier for you to discover what is truly beautiful.
One line of the film is the interpretation of Lee's abnormal indifference, which is a sad line. Another line is the process of Lee and his nephew from being unfamiliar to familiar, which is the warm line.
Hope and warmth are hidden in the daily life of Lee and Patrick. Uncle and nephew have gradually become dependent from separation, as if returning to the beginning of the movie.
Lee is the driver of his nephew, picking up and dropping off as he does; Patrick silently pays attention to his uncle, stops Lee when he is emotional, and helps to explain; seeing Lee's hand and face hurt, he sighs again and again, and finds that his uncle always keeps pictures of the child Shi was stunned for a long time; the two kept the ship and went to sea together, looking at the backs of Patrick and his girlfriend, Lee finally showed a relieved smile.
Patrick longed to live with his uncle, but Lee decided to transfer custody of him to a friend's name. The nephew asked Why can't you stay? Lee said apologetically I can't beat it! I can't beat it! He He killed his child, lost his wife, and lost his brother. He didn't have the confidence to raise his nephew. He was afraid to own it. He was too afraid to lose a loved one again.
The director did not deliberately hide the saddest plot, but only presented the sadness in the most real form.
At the end of the film, there was no gratifying scene. Patrick stayed in Manchester, and Lee returned to Boston to continue his previous life. The difference was that he had to rent a two-room house, one for Patrick, and he had another one. care. The uncle and nephew were chatting with each other, and the film was over. It was like real life.
