It's another Stephen King's Movie;
the protagonist is also a nervous-minded writer;
he lives in the famously haunted Dolphin Hotel at 1408.
If you thought it was a mix of The Shining and Mystery Window,
you'd only get half a point.
I'd rather think it's a John Cusack solo show;
because most of the time he's fighting the spooky room 1408
by himself, mumbling to himself with that tape recorder used for psychotherapy;
I often miss the ghosts of Robert DeNiro's
room in Taxi Driver talking in front of the mirror who jumped to his death and wanted his life;
and the ghost of his young daughter who died of a terminal illness. He kept calling around him: "dad, i miss you..."
Is it scary?
A little bit,
but more often I try to distinguish which are the protagonist's dreams and which are the reality.
I don't think he is as schizophrenic as the protagonist of "Mystery Window",
I believe that room 1408 has a strong willpower to drive all the guests insane to death.
It's better to be more in awe of ghosts and gods, because they can make you evoke those dark memories buried deep in your heart,
and these long-hidden ones are the painful past and unsolvable knots that you don't want to face.
About the Actor:
I've always had a crush on John Cusack, maybe because he looks the way I like it;
watch his films from "Christmas Eve," another gloomy but darkly humorous film ;
He is sullen, he is depressed, he wants to be romantic, but more often he is unlucky and has a dark cloud;
a bit like Bill Murray, but not as old as he is, without the ironic expression on his lips and the ability to see through everything rich experience;
like Nicolas Cage in The Weatherman? Depressed and unlucky experiences are somewhat similar,
but Cage's looks are tougher than him (I secretly thought that Cage played those depressing films because his bitter melon face was really depressing enough);
in fact, he reminded me of Edward Norton in "Fight Club" is also a depressed and depressed man, but Norton's performance makes me feel a little more superficial than him;
and Johnny Depp, a good actor, is neurotic enough Alternative, but maybe it is this alternative that makes him detached from the movie and highlights himself too strongly;
that's why we need John Cusack to be low-key, tasteful, sullen and depressing, bad when bad, bad. He is so tepid when he is young, hiahia~
He is so tepid, I want to say, he is a man Ning with quite literary and artistic temperament.
