I don’t think a person’s choice to die is unilateral. It is neither simply wanting to die, nor simply being forced to the Jedi by others.
There are many people with bad lives who are still alive and looking forward to tomorrow, and many people who are not so bad have died.
We should respect a life, even if it is only a literary and artistic work, but we cannot absolutely believe that nothing like this happens in the world.
In fact, I think Hannah may have been depressed, or prone to depression.
There is no objective truth in the world, only subjective seeing, hearing, and dictation. What you see subconsciously represents what you believe.
So it may be that Hannah didn't see the scene where Zach lost the letter, but simply thought that he didn't reply, he must have lost the letter, of course, this is only a possibility.
There is also another possibility that Zach did lose the letter at the time, but in order to convince Clay that everything Hannah said was not necessarily true, he forged one.
Guessing is meaningless, but its existence can be understood. After all, there are only subjective seeing, hearing, and dictation. The author gives you one ending, but it does not mean that the other ending is unreasonable. It is just a simple work. An ending is needed, and the author just happens to feel that he is biased towards this one.
