But, is it really so great about being Superman?
As time goes by, more and more I see the saddness and loneliness in his eyes. And I found more and more friends around me have the same understanding on this complicated character. It's cool to do the superhero things, but it's not easy to be the superhero.
Every night, he floats upon the planet, listening to normal people's desperate crying for help. While we mortals are living for food, job and fun, what he hears is despair and pain brought by this human world. He cannot do much besides using his powers to help people, doing good deeds. And we applause for that, while secretly feeling jealous of his super powers and wishing one day we could have some of those powers as well. But few of us are willing to share the burden and the responsibility on his shoulders.
"I'm only human, I don't have powers." Most of us use this excuse. But when are we starting to question on ourselves, that whether we have done our part to help this world and society within our capability? If the answer is negative, what makes us think that we could be a hero when we got the powers?
Superman loves Lois. But he cannot unveil his true identity. Clark and Superman are the two sides of the same character. We can't tell who's playing whose role. Lois has no love interest in Clark. She loves only Superman, but the point is, who doesn't? Nothing can prove that Lois's love for Superman is not as shallow as any other woman who's fascinated by Superman's super powers and beautiful face and body. And that's the saddest thing about being Superman.
One of my best friends used to say, it's the endurance and loneliness of Superman that is touching her. I can't agree more.
Superman is destined to be lonely. But this loneliness is not the pathetic kind, it's one of the greatest. And with us understanding this, he's not alone, any more.
