Science and Faith, We All Need

Dan Brown was the first person who dared to make fun of the Vatican. After "The Da Vinci Code" questioned the root of religion - the divinity of God, "Angels and Demons" described the filthy power struggle after the death of the Vatican Pope.
The Vatican is a sacred place in the eyes of believers, but a mysterious place in the eyes of ordinary people. The beautiful churches and sculptures in this film, as well as the thousand-year-old Vatican tradition, are enough to attract me to watch. "The Da Vinci Code" is a movie that I barely understood after reading the original Chinese book. There are too many religious terms and allusions. Although the puzzle-solving part can be understood by reading books, the clues that lead to the puzzle-solving are not something that atheists like me can understand. As for this film, I haven't read the original, but I believe the movie version has also been simplified to some extent. Compared with "The Da Vinci Code", the contradictions of this film are much simpler. Leaving aside the background of the Vatican, it is a typical Hollywood suspense type film. Follow the clues of the previous deceased to solve the story of a serial murder case, but the religious cloak casts a layer of mystery on the story, and at the same time makes the ending a little bit of thinking. Of course, after watching a lot of this kind of film, you will know the routine, and the most unlikely person must be the murderer. It should be said that this film is more enjoyable to watch, but its structure and ideology are much worse than "The Da Vinci Code".
After watching the two films, I feel that the cloak of religious hypocrisy was mercilessly torn off by the author. Although it is a novel, the religious history in it is clear. This is full of bloody killings and shameless deceit. For the sake of power, one can do whatever it takes, and in front of the believers, they have to preach benevolence, righteousness and morality. The Holy See is also full of factions, intriguing and fighting for power and profit. There are two good sentences in the film: "Religion is imperfect because of human imperfection"; "Science and faith, we both need it". Unfortunately, this is after all a novelist's statement, and the high-ranking people who really hold religious power may not necessarily agree with these views. I don't know what religious secrets will be revealed in the last part of the trilogy.

Angels & Demons quotes

  • [Police have been ordered to return Langdon to the Vatican]

Robert Langdon: [to poiice] The Vatican is about to see its fourth Cardinal murdered tonight! Now, look... You can do as they say and force me back to the Vatican, where we can all mourn his death together. Or you can show how real cops act, and take me to the Piazza Navona, where we still might be able to stop it!

[the police start conferring between themselves]

Robert Langdon: Oh, by all means, let's talk it over. In 14 minutes, he's gonna be dead!

  • Camerlengo Patrick McKenna: [after breaking into Conclave and announcing that church is at war] ... but science and religion are not enemies! There are simply some things that science is just too young to understand. So the church pleads: "stop", "slow down", "think", "wait"... and for this - they call us backward. But who is more ignorant: the man who cannot define lightning, or the man who does not respect its natural awesome power?
