The Reality of Dreams——A Comment on "School of Rock"

In "School of Rock", the old fat man Jack Black still looks agile and passionate. He twisted his fat body, twisted his unhandsome face, flung his unshaped hair, and even jumped off the stage and no one caught him. He, without a job, lived in someone else's house, looked at Ned's girlfriend's face, was voted out of the band by the band members... All alone, only ROCK N' ROLL, and his unspoken passion.

However, by chance, Dewey impersonated Ned and became Horace Green's substitute teacher. Originally, he just paid Ned's rent to make money, but he accidentally met a group of children with awe-inspiring talents. At this point, his passion was freely vented and poured out. Zack on lead guitar, Posh Spice on bass, MR. Cool on keyboards, Spazzy McGee on drums, and three little girls in harmony, that's what this School of rock is all about, to comfort other kids and make them feel like they're part of it , so there are guards, and porters and managers who love performance. Then there were rehearsals, there were lessons on rock and their own work. The film is an old-fashioned story about a dream coming true, like they pretended to be terminally ill to qualify for the competition, like their work was recognized by parents and all audiences, like Dewey set up his own rock classroom, like Ned finally stopped. Repress yourself to pick up the guitar again.

It's a comedy, and when I watch it, I feel sad. I don't want to talk about the rigidity of school or the talent of children. For Dewey himself, I think, he is always in a real dream.

A person with a persistent pursuit of rock, like Dewey, who is not famous, unpopular, and unable to survive, still has a passion for this dream, which is sad in itself. He seems to be walking in a dead end. When he saw the hope of rock and roll in the child, he became enthusiastic again, and he was like a kindergarten teacher experimenting on the child. These experiments are deplorable, because they are relatively simple-minded and easy to be swayed by, although they are very talented. The students did not like rock music at the beginning, they just had a solid foundation in music. The motivation for joining the band is also simple and complex, Zack is dissatisfied with his father's control, MR. Cool is inspired by "rock music can make people cool and popular", Summer is because joining the band teacher will give many little stars ...When Dewey decided the style of the band, he heard that everyone's favorite singers were Christina, Puff Daddy, Liza Minnelli, and knew nothing about Led Zeppelin. Therefore, children are just Dewey's experiments, including everyone's blind obedience to teachers when they were young. The only difference is that different teachers have different ideas and methods. What Dewey instills is a kind of rock and roll passion and spirit. Such rebellion and anger coincide with Perverted school education contradicts. So it seems to me that Dewey doesn't show a higher level of quality that is more inspiring to students, he just imposes his own love for rock music on the child, letting the child realize his anger, realize his passion, realize him The dream of reorganizing the band. So it's sad, the sadness of a man walking in a dream of reality. Like a person who has lost a lover, she will pour all her love for the lover into the things left by the lover, which is a kind of empathy.

Anyone who is too attached to one thing is sad because his life is always dominated by this thing. The same is true for Ned. His repression still can't resist his love for rock music, so he finally gave up his girlfriend and chose the guitar.

In fact, no matter whether one is overly enthusiastic about one thing or not, as long as one has a choice, it is painful. Look at the little characters in the film, is anyone happy? Principal Mullins is depressed by being serious as a principal; Ned's girlfriend is always choosing between her boyfriend and Dewey, and constantly keeps Ned from picking up the guitar again; the children have to vent their anger together under pressure from parents and schools They made choices in a way that they roared step off and stepped into Dewey's invisible control. They made their parents feel puzzled and angry when they chose to perform; What is the $15,000 for?" ...
The spirit of rock music is rebellion, independence, and all concepts related to freedom. The movie certainly does a good job of advertising rock's front image, but it's subverting something on the back. For example, rock has no sex, no drugs, no alcohol, rock is just rock, it's an art, it's simple music, it's positive. But in my opinion, rock and roll is the product of spiritual tearing, and it is an extremely contradictory individual. It is a means of yearning for freedom in an unfree state, and it is a vent for the unfulfilled ideal of a better reality. It is the helplessness of escaping from ugliness and at the same time being polluted by ugliness, the despair that people feel deeply painfully on the surface of flashy happiness, and the confusion of constantly struggling between life and death... So while he is pursuing spiritual liberation, He is constantly troubled by mental problems, which inevitably leads to a series of typical rock problems such as drugs, alcohol, promiscuity, depression, suicide, etc. Rock music and love, life, education, war, and everything are related, maybe because it contains too many things, so it can more truly understand the pain of human life, the illusory and shattering of real dreams. Pathetic. The movie mentions Jimi Hendrix more than once. Everyone knows that this is not a positive image, at least for children, but he is a world-recognized tragic hero. What more can children understand when they play rock and roll, apart from their technical skills and seemingly sophisticated show experience? Compared with "school of rock", I prefer the nakedness and cruelty of "Velvet Goldmine", or the truth and depression of "last days".

"School of Rock" was not in the mood to watch until today. It is not a movie about rock, but a musical about the growth of students, an inspirational drama about the empathy of passionate middle-aged people.
