Tell you why Jerome committed suicide

This film is my favorite movie. I have never written a film review, just because I am afraid that it will not be well written and I will not be able to explain my point of view. But recently, I suddenly felt that if you don't do things now, you won't be able to do them in the future. Therefore, I took the risk and wrote down the points that touched me in this film, hoping to help everyone understand this film.

Highlight 1 Why are these people with perfect genes attracted to someone with a major genetic defect?

Good genes are a curse, and Jerome initially thought that if you had talent, you could achieve your goals. And Vincent, who has a genetic defect, told him that goals don't matter, hard work and determination can make dreams come true, and dreams are like a black hole, you never know the possibilities contained in them. No matter how high the goal is, it is just a very high threshold, and dreams are like black holes. Once you have it, you have unlimited possibilities, and at the same time, you can attract people around you to help you.

Vincent's story also tells us why most of the people who have been educated by successful studies are still inactive? Because the so-called dream is the action itself, those who pursue dreams are already on their way; while those who focus on theory are always preparing, they are always staying at the starting point and fantasizing about the end point.

Highlight 2 Jerome's suicide

I remember the first time I saw this film, when I was a student. At that time, I thought that Jude Law (Jerome) was too handsome, and the supporting role aura obviously overshadowed the protagonist Ethan Hawke (Vincent). At the end of the film, Jerome's suicide really made me depressed for a long, long time. At that time, I couldn't understand why he did it. Obviously his good friend Vincent will come back in a year. Except for the disability of his legs, why should Jerome end his life so easily?

After watching it many times, I realized that everything is because of dreams. Because genetically modified people crush ordinary people in terms of data, genetically modified people are more concerned about quantifiable indicators, which indirectly leads to their preference for competition. With stronger genes, Jerome is more concerned with competition than the average geneticist. Once Jerome is frustrated, the feeling of being hit is much stronger than that of ordinary people. Because failure itself is a denial of his existence (I have such strong genes, and I can't compare to others, so what is the meaning of my existence). That's why Jerome has an almost paranoid distaste for that silver medal.

The competitive Jerome didn't have much of a dream at first until he later met Vincent. One day, Vincent took him to the launch center and showed him what a dream is. Jerome discovered that there is such a beautiful possibility in this world. At the end of the credits, Jerome really said this sentence "I only lend you my body, you lend me your dream" (I only lent you my identity, and you shared your dream with me). I believe that at that time Jerome had the same dream as Vincent, and really wanted to see the outer sky. After all, the one thing they both have in common is that they feel out of tune with life on the ground and want to escape from this world.

Of course, it is impossible for Jerome, who is disabled with both feet, to drive a spacecraft to space with Vincent. Therefore, Jerome took the next step and kept working hard with the goal of helping Vincent realize his dream. When his friend realizes his dream and prepares to leave Earth, he finds that his mission is over. And the beauty of the dream made it impossible for him to go back to the past and live the sluggish life of relying on tobacco and alcohol. So before leaving, he gave Vincent a pinch of his hair and asked Vincent to see the outside world for him. Then he committed suicide, but this time he solemnly wore the silver medal that he had despised for many years. At that moment, he finally accepted the result that Vincent was the champion and he was the runner-up. At this moment, Jerome also reached a reconciliation with the world, and then left with peace of mind

The ending is a bit sad, but I think it's actually Jerome's best release.

Highlight 3 Sanitation workers

When Vincent was working for this old man, the old man kept telling Vincent not to daydream, he couldn't go to space, even to work in Gattaca.

After many years, Vincent became the best navigator in Gattaca. One day, he ran into his old boss at the entrance of the corridor. He was worried that his identity might be revealed. But the old man didn't notice at all, and respectfully called him "Mr Jerome".

This story tells us that if you're not happy with your current situation, don't let anyone, especially the mortals, tell you what to do. What you can do is have a dream and embrace it, because dreams can take you to places no one else would have dared to imagine, and to do things no ordinary person would have dared to imagine.

Highlight 4: Swimming

Anyone who has watched this film will be deeply impressed by the two brothers, Vincent and Anton, who had three swimming competitions in the sea. It is said that life first originated from the ocean. Vincent represents a natural and primitive life with genetic defects, while Anton represents an artificially optimized life with perfect genes.

As a result, in the three games, Vincent lost the first game and won the next two games, which shows that in natural competition, innate conditions only determine the beginning, and effective efforts the day after tomorrow are the key.

In addition, the phrase "I never save anything for swimming back" that Vincent said to Anton (I never leave a way for myself) is the best portrayal of his life, and it is also the most exciting line in the whole film in my opinion.

Highlight 5: Doctors

When I saw it for the first time, I didn't realize it. I thought the doctor was Vincent's father.

But in fact, the doctor is the true portrayal of Vincent's father: if the father is still alive, in the end, the father will affirm Vincent's efforts like the doctor.

In addition, this doctor did help Vincent a lot in secret. Before taking off, Vincent's complex and grateful expression to the doctor is also one of the tears of the film.

end

The wish of many years was finally fulfilled, and a stone in my heart finally fell to the ground. I hope this film can inspire you, who is motivated, as you did back then.

PS It is especially recommended for students who like swimming to take a look (yes, it's you:)

  • [last lines]

Vincent: [voiceover] For someone who was never meant for this world, I must confess I'm suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe I'm not leaving... maybe I'm going home.

  • Vincent: Is the only way you can succeed is to see me fail?
