I think what the director wants to express is a kind of ordinary beauty, an inconspicuous little bookstore on an ordinary street. William's strange roommate blah blah blah. At the party, they laughed and went to grab the cake of a failed life. Sadness expressed in this way is very real and free and easy. The girl in the wheelchair (I don't even remember her name), can't stand up anymore, can't have a baby, but she said it all with such a calm expression on her face. William's sister's hair is messy, and the dress is cheap but it's pure simplicity. Perhaps what moved Anna most was their sincerity.
