The Mist: An Interpretation After Silent Hill

When the familiar chirping sounded in the movie The Mist, I was reminded of Silent Hill. The connection between the two films is undeniable: the fog after the ringing; the murderous intention hidden in the fog; the bewitching and sacrifice in the name of judgment; the struggle to protect the child...even the familiar image , such as the incarnation of a just female policewoman into an equally upright and sober lady, the two "bishops" are also shown in the image of moderate women.
However, "Silent Hill" is so fantasy, or rather, so faithful to the game, that in the end, the Avengers end the evil in the same evil way, which seems very hasty. The film "The Mist" attempts to make a relatively serious interpretation of a similar dilemma. The most serious way is to make it a tragedy, not just a horror movie.
When people are separated from a society with a complete system and become isolated islands, they are in a fog, and they do not know the truth. When killings come again and again, they have little resistance, and irrational behaviors must spread through individuals into organizations. Mrs. CARMODY, initially in people's discussions, was just a mentally abnormal person in the small town, and then a few more vulnerable women became her followers, then those who were overstimulated, and finally developed into a group The anaesthesia, chanting slogans, using prayer as a weapon, and treating anyone she casually points at as an enemy. From the indifference of the crowd when the first woman pleaded for help, to the cruelty of pushing the innocent officer involved in the disaster out of the supermarket and witnessing him being devoured, to the madness of finally sacrificing a child, the enclosed space is suffocating. However, people who are trapped in the fog do not know what the real salvation is, so they are willing to obey the guidance, believe in the destiny, and even despicably obtain temporary solace by sacrificing others.
The sober then chose to run away. But when the gas ran out and the monster was in front of him, Mike raised the gun in his hand, they reached a consensus with their eyes, four fingerflicks ended the four people, the lonely Mike let out a terrible scream, and then bit the bullet and rushed out of the car, to suffer a more terrible fate. The ending is really more terrifying, and it is not the monsters that are approaching, but the reinforcements. Nearly, they won, but he chose to shoot by the slightest, and he was defeated.
People are looking for a sense of substitution when watching horror movies. At this time, I am afraid that it is right to stay in the supermarket and wait for rescue. But if you stay in the crowd, do you choose to stay awake, or go crazy with it? Who can penetrate the fog and see the truth in advance. So there is no right or wrong, only the fear that is inscribed in human nature and can never be shaken off.

The Mist quotes

  • Wayne Jessup: I heard stuff.

    Mrs. Carmody: Stuff...

Wayne Jessup: Yeah, we all heard stuff! Like uh, how they... they thought that there were other dimensions. You know, other... other worlds all around us, and how they wanted to try to make a window, you know, so they can look through and see what's on the other side.

Mrs. Carmody: Well maybe your window turned out to be a door. Isn't it?

Wayne Jessup: Not my door! It's the scientists!

Mrs. Carmody: [sarcastically] Oh, the scientists.

Wayne Jessup: Yes, the scientists! They must've ripped a hole through by accident. That's how their world keeps on spilling through into ours. That's what Donaldson was saying right before he killed himself. I didn't understand half of it.

  • Dan Miller: [after the car runs out of gas] Well, we gave it a good shot. Nobody can say we didn't.
