The Untouchables (1987)
continues to watch the new entry into the IMDB250, which has been seen before.
The film tells the story of several people who banned alcohol and anti-corruption in Chicago. The male protagonist is a Treasury Department agent who comes to Chicago to confront a bootlegger gang leader. The hero is disheartened by being played in the first action, but because of this, he knows an old patrolman. A few days later, the male protagonist wanted the old patrolman to help him handle the case, and the old patrolman agreed to join after hesitating. Later, the hero and the old patrolman found a young man at the police academy, and the headquarters sent an accountant to assist the hero. So, the four attacked the bootleggers under the tip of the old patrolman. After repeatedly receiving the goods, the four mastered the important evidence of the gang leader. However, before the court hearing, important witnesses were shot and killed, and the accountant was also in distress. Everyone was very frustrated, but with the efforts of the old patrolman, they found a new witness, but the old patrolman was shot and killed. In the end, the hero reveals the truth about the jury, which leads the judge to conduct a notarized trial, and the gang leader is sentenced to nineteen years in prison.
I have a strange feeling about this movie because there are two very different feelings. Just after watching it, I feel that this film is very good-looking, with twists and turns in the story, exquisite pictures, exquisite shooting, elegant costumes, and the theme of the film is also the very main theme of "justice overcomes evil". But after thinking about it carefully, you will find that there are very big loopholes in the plot of the film, and the shooting is not so perfect, and even the theme is not so realistic. Therefore, this film can be said to be a film with mixed reputations, that is, it is good and can't stand scrutiny, and it is delicate and rough. All in all, it's not a perfect movie.
There are many loopholes in the plot, such as why did the old patrolman help the hero? And face the police boss recklessly in the police station? Are they familiar with it before? But the movie doesn't tell. There is also the appearance of the accountant of the Ministry of Finance. It is also inexplicable. Why did the superior send a person who can't use a gun? It is also very far-fetched to join young people. He joined the anti-corruption team in a confused way. Why did he not want to be corrupt? The plot is also not explained. The role of the actor's wife is also superfluous, her existence has nothing to do with the plot at all, it is optional. These are holes in the story. Second, the theme of the movie is very unrealistic. Why does the hero want to fight corruption? What is the purpose of anti-corruption? Just one law cannot explain it clearly. Moreover, after the hero's victory, the prohibition order will be cancelled. Isn't he busy working in vain? This makes the happy ending of the movie seem hilarious. Third, the filming also avoids the important points. It spends a lot of ink to describe how the male protagonist acts, but it describes very little about the gangster side. The movie should also show some gangster aspects, such as how the final accountant was sent to the train station, why he came, and so on. On the contrary, the film uses a lot of pictures to show the shootout, the most typical of which is the killing of the old patrolman and the shootout at the train station. These scenes do not show the theme of the film at all. These pictures are total gimmicks! In short, there are many shortcomings in the film, which can be noticed after a little thought.
Of course, there are still advantages to this film. What it stands out most is the filming aspect, namely a couple of really nice long takes and the train station shootout, as well as the well-crafted framing. I won't say more about these, there is a lot of information about them on the Internet. I just want to say that the film's excellent image style enables the audience to have a profound understanding of the life of Chicago in the 1930s, that is, it is gorgeous and dark, which is a paradise on earth and a hotbed of criminals. In addition, the costumes, sets, and props in the film also show such characteristics. All in all, this film is a model of crime film in shooting, and Brian De Palma still has it.
There is nothing to say about the actors of this film, and the performance is quite satisfactory. Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, Andy Garcia, Robert De Niro and others are big stars, but they don't have any great performances. Only Patricia Clarkson, the vase beauty in the whole film, impressed me because she was beautiful. In addition, seeing Kevin Costner and Patricia Clarkson when they were young, I feel that time flies, it is better to be young.
in conclusion. It's a good but not great movie, but still a good movie, just not perfect.
Patricia Clarkson
