"Bridge of Spies" is based on the prisoner exchange incident at Greenick Bridge during the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. At that time, the United States finally caught Rudolf Abel, the Soviet spy master with the "man with a thousand faces" and "reputation". But I didn't expect that at this time the Soviet Union had captured the pilot Bowers who was conducting high-altitude reconnaissance on the Soviet Union. After many consultations between the two governments, an agreement was finally reached, and it was finally decided to exchange prisoners at the Greenick Bridge. In the end, both countries successfully rescued the comrades who were trapped in enemy prisoners.
This film is an ingenious theme film. It can be said that to a certain extent, it can be said that except for lawyer Donovan and the three people who were exchanged, the others who participated in the prisoner exchange action were all villains (appearing in an unwelcome image) Their goal is to successfully trade Powers back. It can be said that as long as the goal can be achieved, anything can be done. At this time, another international student was detained in East Germany. Donovan proposed a policy of actively rescuing the students, but the CIA staff in the same group ignored him, repeatedly emphasizing that the goal of the trip was Powers, and persuading Donovan to give up the rescue student. However, Donovan still adhered to the action policy of "saving both", actively mediating with the Soviet Union and (East) Germany, and finally brokered the transaction. That's the beauty of the movie -- highlighting the individual. Throughout the film, Donovan goes from false defense to true defense to "Save both." It seems to be a loyal practitioner of the spirit of the US Constitution. No matter how much resistance there is from the outside world, he still insists on "justice" in his heart, and "justice" is the law of the United States. After the movie has established this image, regardless of the historical facts, its purpose of singing the main theme has been achieved.
Overall, Bridge of Spies is about Spielberg's basic level. But the surprising Spielberg who made "Schindler's List" and "Ryan Who Saved Privates" still hasn't returned. In the past, the bright red in the black and white world of "Schindler's List" not only has a strong visual impact but also contains a strong emotion. The hand-held photography of landing on the beach in "Saving Private Ryan" makes many people feel disgusted. It can be said that there are few war movies with a strong sense of war substitution. Looking at "Bridge of Spies" again, the photography, narrative, rhythm, and performance are all first-class, but there is no flash point (feature) that can make us impressed. That's the embarrassment of Spielberg's main theme -- the average score is high, but nothing stands out from other Oscar-nominated films in every way. "Lincoln", "War Horse" as well, so despite being nominated for multiple awards, the revenue is very small. These films can be regarded as good films, but they do not give people a bright eye.
The mother's back in "Saving Private Ryan" outlines the silhouettes of thousands of mothers in the United States and even the world. Although Ryan's mother did not show her face, it was precisely because of this that it contained a strong symbolic meaning and had a strong spiritual impact; in "Bridge of Spies", a lady reading a newspaper was used to refer to the American people's affection for Donovan Changes in attitude. The standout is Donovan. Without the psychic punch of Saving Private Ryan.
Nonetheless, Spielberg is still a very good director, who can make "Saving Private Ryan" as well as "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Whether it is commercial or non-commercial, he can easily control it. Such a director is very rare. Perhaps, the inability to surprise the audience is both a bottleneck and a realm. As a movie fan, I can only silently hope that Lao Si will get rid of the bottleneck as soon as possible and shoot better works.
