"Apocalypto" gave me a very realistic and cruel sense of shock - the history of mankind is accompanied by killing. Humans once chose to kill others to satisfy their desires. In a certain social environment, such as the Mayan kingdom in the story, people are used to blaming other people for their own faults and piercing other people's chests with their own sharp knives. , showing off to their people with their mighty beating hearts. It may seem like a barbarian tale from a long time ago, but Apocalypto doesn't seem to want to tell us a story of human childhood.
In the face of the white landers, Hu Zhuo chose the same "go to the depths of the forest to start a new future" as the fugitives at the beginning of the story--perhaps he had vaguely sensed that even greater killing was about to unfold. Whether it is the Mayan kingdom or the white invaders, they will not show mercy to the aliens who have coexisted with them for thousands of years or are about to coexist on the same continent. This reminds me of the destruction of the Chinese by the Japanese in World War II.
In the end, the only thing I questioned about this film is "A great civilization is not conquered by without until it has destroyed itself from within". This sentence seems to be defending the colonial history of white people. Mayan civilization has its cruel places. But I believe it will never be as exaggerated and morbid as described in the film. It is no wonder that Europeans and Americans always have an excessive sense of self-satisfaction with their democratic institutions.
