I secretly think that its incomprehension is reflected in three aspects. 1. Full of local slang and street slang, half of which are not found in UrbanDictionary, this can be slowly understood by listening to hip hop more. 2. Lots of political and legal plots, words like subpoena are just the simplest of them. 3. Profound literary connotation, which depends on the audience's life experience and comprehension ability.
Close to life, vivid descriptions of various street characters. Regarding this, reprint the drama review I wrote on IMDb as follows.
Daniels' in denial of The Detail
So many things go wrong in Baltimore today. No wonder why Daniels' in denial.
Daniels' in denial that his best detective always does things behind him.
Daniels' in denial that his wife is incredibly ugly, while his best detective sleeps with just about all the hot women in Baltimore.
Daniels' in denial that the woman he's having an affair with, is also fantasizing his best detective and the man who approved the first wiretap -- Judge Phalan.
No, Daniel's life is not great, but it is real. And The Wire is the only scripted thing that I have seen, that portrays life so realistically. Embrace the cold, cruel and f***ed up reality.
Don't take it as entertainment. Even if you understand it, it's not very entertaining. But because it's real, it can enlighten you on how to face life and bring about better enjoyment than entertainment.
There are two points I want to remind you in advance. 1. There are a lot of gay characters, most of them are gay, I don't care. 2. The sex life of the male protagonist is very exciting, which makes people uncomfortable. The same goes for the male leads of Arrested Development and The Grooming Room. Arrested Development lacks depth, and Grooming Room is about sex, so they have a reason to do so. And why "The Wire" has a handsome guy as the protagonist, I don't know.
I like hip hop and the fighting spirit of street black people. I once did a bit of research on UrbanDictionary to find out what the word "soldier" that black people use so often means. In the end, I didn't turn it over, but I realized that soldier has no special meaning. It refers to a warrior, a warrior who faces life and is not afraid of hardships. Method Man, a famous hip hop singer and a member of the Wudang sect, will appear in the second half of the second season, not as a big star, but as a member of the society.
