The Book of Elijah

In the future, a devastating catastrophe broke out in the world. Violence is rampant, corpses are everywhere, and everyone is in danger. Force has become the decisive force in this wild land, but in fact, there are resources hidden behind it. Carnegie was such a person who mastered water resources. Under his leadership, using force and resources, a town was suddenly established on this land. Avery, the guardian of the Book of Humanity's future destiny, passed the city as he made his way west. Ellie's fearlessness attracted Carnegie, but he was even more pleasantly surprised when he found that the book Ellie guarded was the Bible he had been looking for. He wanted to expand a bigger city through this book, although many people said it was to satisfy ambition, but in fact I saw a poor man who was afraid of the future and wanted to be embraced by the Lord. In the last scene, when the heroine's mother tried to touch Carnegie with her hand, Carnegie put her head up and closed her eyes, as if she was receiving the Lord's baptism and comfort. But the irony is that Carnegie wanted to get rid of fear, but he ruled his people precisely by fear. Maybe he had told himself in his heart not to use this method after he got the book. But because he did it, it was decided that Avery's book would not be given to such a person. In the end, Avery gave the "book" to a museum and wrote the book orally. The moral is to hand over the book to the entire human civilization.
When resources are scarce, force naturally becomes a weapon. There is a very impressive scene where Avery is massacred when he first encounters a robber. The combination of light and shadow turns the film into just a few black shadows fighting, reminding me of the game "Alto's Adventure", which also has a sense of Chinese martial arts.
Avery's changes before and after are also worth mentioning. At the beginning, when Ellie saw a woman being raped on the way, he kept saying "Stay on the path, it's not your concern". After that, the female lead followed Ellie, and Ellie walked away from the water room where he was. He muttered "Stay on the path, it's not your concern". Maybe what he was thinking at the moment was that his mission was to deliver books, so he shouldn't cause too much trouble. After Carnegie pointed a gun at the woman and asked him to take out the book, he told them. If it was before, Ellie must have been thinking about it again. Later, when the hostess asked him why he did it, he said, "For so many years, I only wanted to protect this book, but I forgot to use what I learned in my life, that is, helping others is more than helping myself." Maybe the kindness of the heroine and Carnegie's persecution made him suddenly figure it out.
In the film, there is also an old couple who survived very well. They have guns, traps, and a nice house, but they always feel that it is strange to suddenly erect a house in a wasteland. They put up a "Don't Enter" sign outside the house, indicating that they did not want to take the initiative to hurt others, but when someone broke in, the trap they designed would put the visitor in a difficult situation, and most of the previous visitors were killed by them and ate them. How benevolent they seem, doesn't match what they do at all.
There are also many wonderful details in the film, and it is a movie that can be watched again.

The Book of Eli quotes

  • Eli: They say the war tore a hole in the sky, you've probably heard the stories.

    Solara: Yeah.

Eli: The war tore a hole in the sky, the sun came down, burnt everything, everyone, I wandered, I didn't really know what I should do or where I was going. I was just moving from place to place, trying to stay alive. And then one day I heard this voice. I don't know how to explain it, it's like it was coming from inside me. But I could hear it clear as day. Clear as I can hear you talking to me now. It told me to carry the book west, it told me that a path would be laid out before me, that I'd be led to a place where the book would be safe. It told me I'd be protected, against anyone or anything that tried to stand in my way. If only I would have faith. That was thirty years ago and I've been walking ever since.

Solara: And you did all this because a voice told you to?

Eli: I know what I hear, I know what I heard, I know I'm not crazy, I didn't imagine it

  • Hoyt: [seeing two dead hijackers] It's like he's protected somehow. Like there's nothing that can touch him

Carnegie: Oh, he's just a fucking man. You put a bullet in him, he'll go down like any other.
