But I think few people can confidently say "I understand" after watching a full movie. So THE BOX is another science fiction puzzle by Richard Kelly. The main theme that the film wants to tell can be seen through the "Introduction", the greed and redemption of "Humanity", but the whole process of expounding this theme is far more complicated than the "Introduction", which resulted in THE BOX and "Introduction". The biggest difference of "Death Illusion", or the "gap": The reason why "Death Illusion" is successful is that the "puzzle" is wrapped in a memorable story, and the audience can only understand it after strenuously solving the puzzle. The story hidden behind and moved is quite interesting and fascinating; however, THE BOX has turned the cart before the horse and wrapped a difficult mystery with a human story. Let me ask: If you already know the main idea of the movie, and probably the plot direction, who has the leisure to solve the "inexplicable" puzzles in the movie? This difference can be said to be the culprit of THE BOX, just like a man who chooses to wear a sexy looming woman when facing a woman, the audience may be confused after watching "Death Illusion", but the melancholy sentiment of the whole movie is revealed. It is quite fascinating and attracts people to solve the puzzles to find out, but THE BOX puts the main story of the story in front of the audience at a glance. Those puzzles are suddenly unnecessary for the audience.
Of course, if there is a good enough theme, perhaps the audience will want to study how the movie expresses this theme. Another problem with THE BOX is that this theme has been exposed as early as the "Introduction", a commonplace talk. Human nature issues run through the whole film, and there is delicacy, but it is more procrastination and mystery. As a result, the audience will be very depressed. After watching for nearly two hours, they are still confused, dizzy and bored by the plot. It turns out that the movie is about the theme that was guessed before watching the movie, and it will feel two. Hours were completely wasted. In addition, I don't like the ending very much. The too old-fashioned "unfinished" ending is not as memorable as "Death Illusion".
"Death Illusion" is not perfect, but because its puzzles and stories reflect each other, the shortcomings can be ignored; the many shortcomings of THE BOX cannot be ignored, but Richard Kelly is still Richard Kelly after all, and there are still many in the film. A lovely highlight. The story takes place in the mid-70s, so the whole film has a little retro tune from the soundtrack to the photography, and sometimes suddenly feels like watching an old film; the effects of those weird scenes are good or bad, and if it is good, it will cause a sense of horror. The bad ones, of course, become cold jokes. For example, the library and MOTEL scenes are not bad, and the mysterious figure played by Frank Langella is also reminiscent of the double-faced character Harvey in "The Dark Knight", as well as the heroine. In a scene where the mysterious man called, the heroine asked where the mysterious man was. The mysterious man said that she was looking at her. Then the heroine found a strange man in her backyard and kept watching her walking around the house, feeling weird. Somewhat horrified.
If you ask me what this movie says and expresses, I think I know it. But you ask me if I understand, ask me why those people have nosebleeds, why the male protagonist appeared in another place without dying in a car accident, and why the male protagonist appeared in one of the three "water columns" in the library and then appeared to him. On the bed at home, why are they in the suspended water, why those people with nosebleeds have to wait in line at the end, where is the sacred person of the mysterious person, why does he do this if he is an alien, if the couple who finally got the box don’t press the button? Will the protagonist die? What is the mystery in the library? Why the mysterious person makes the heroine hold his hand and the heroine loses consciousness like sleepwalking.
