After entering the cinema and looking around, the audience on Thursday afternoon was sparse. I don’t know how many people like me came to see this film at Richard Kelly, and I don’t know who else is like me. The faithful fan of "Death Illusion". I remember when I was in middle school, I would read "Death Illusion" countless times. I bought the director’s cut version and repeated the new scenes and commentary tracks. I would go to foreign FANS websites to copy the poems written by Donnie Darko in the film, and I would go Play the decryption game on the official website of the movie, copy the text on the [The Philosophy of Time Travel] in the film, and cut and collect "Watching Movies" for the detailed decryption of the film, and even change your screen name into one. Darko. Thinking back on these so many years later, I really miss myself at that time. Simple attachments are even a little ignorant and naive, but these are valuable because of the forced growth that never goes back. So to this day, people often ask about it. Why should I take this screen name and I would be a little embarrassed to say, "I took it before, but I don't want to change it", but I really don't want to change it. Now recalling "Death Illusion" is as clear in my mind as I saw yesterday. The whole movie is like a psychedelic and weird science fiction puzzle, but the inside is like the theme song [MAD WORLD], like a melancholic and dreamy poem. Later, some people said it was a poem about youth, and some people said it was a poem about life. Of course, there are countless people who say that it is about pretending to be 13 young literary youth and SB. It seems to be inconclusive so far, but I still love "Death Illusion". The scene in which Donnie Darko talks with Frank the Rabbit in the movie theater is still one of my favorite movie scenes.
It was Richard Kelly’s debut work, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, who was not Brokeback and Prince of Persia at the time, and Drew Barrymore, who was not yet a director, guest-produced. Some fans have won numerous praises and are now a member of the list of excellent CULT movies. It was 5 years later that Richard Kelly "out of the mountain" directed a "Southern Legend" with no personal style, which attracted a lot of scolding. 2009 is already the eighth year since the release of "Death Illusion". When the introduction of THE BOX was leaked, I believe the fans must look forward to it as I did, because Richard Kelly is back in the mysterious and strange story.
Second,
it is rainy and cold in Paris today, and I really don’t want to go out. But THE BOX kept circling in his mind, and finally did not resist the temptation and ran to the cinema.
From the first second of the movie, I tried to find the mark of Richard Kelly, or "Death Illusion." Compared with "Death Illusion", the protagonist of THE BOX can be said to be shining stars. Although Cameron Diaz has been considered famous, but at least he is still famous. The male protagonist James Marsden is from the handsome captain of the X-Men, and the mysterious man in the film It is even the famous Frank Langella, who was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actor only at the beginning of the year for his superb and wonderful acting in "Dialogue Nixon". It is also worth mentioning that Holmes Osborne, who played the sheriff in the film and the father of the heroine, once played the father of Donnie Darko in "Death Illusion", and once again saw some kindness.
The psychedelic and thrilling atmosphere of the movie certainly inherited the "Death Illusion", and the sometimes sad and sometimes weird soundtrack was also learned in "Death Illusion". Like this reminds me of the elements of "Death Illusion" flooding the whole film, I believe it should be considered a fun thing for the fans of "Death Illusion" to find these elements. For example, what appeared many times in "Death Illusion", like a weird liquid separating two worlds, also appeared many times in THE BOX. From the perspective of the story, the protagonists in the two films are faced with choices. Donnie Darko's choice is at the end of the film. He wants to save the world. However, this choice is not so much an independent one, but is actually more helpless; THE BOX hero and heroine At the beginning of the film, there is a choice of pressing the button or not, and at the end of the film, the choice of whether to redeem or not. This is a completely autonomous and testing multiple-choice question. In addition, the protagonists of the two films are controlled by more powerful forces. Donnie Darko is led step by step to the final self-sacrifice ending by the big rabbit Frank, and everyone around him is Frank's pawn; the hero and the hero of THE BOX are always It is under the surveillance and control of the mysterious person. The mysterious person can even decide whether they are alive or dead, and anyone around them may be controlled by the mysterious person.
So what story does THE BOX tell? Probably the content is believed to be a gimmick: the two couples received a box, and a mysterious old man appeared and told them that if they press the button in the box, a person they don’t know in this world will be lost, and in exchange, they will get 1 million dollars. But I think few people can confidently say "I understand" after watching a full movie. So THE BOX is another science fiction puzzle by Richard Kelly. The main theme that the film wants to tell can be seen through the "Introduction", the greed and redemption of "Humanity", but the whole process of expounding this theme is far more complicated than the "Introduction", which resulted in THE BOX and "Introduction". The biggest difference of "Death Illusion", or the "gap": The reason why "Death Illusion" is successful is that the "puzzle" is wrapped in a memorable story, and the audience can only understand it after strenuously solving the puzzle. The story hidden behind and moved is quite interesting and fascinating; however, THE BOX has turned the cart before the horse and wrapped a difficult mystery with a human story. Let me ask: If you already know the main idea of the movie, and probably the plot direction, who has the leisure to solve the "inexplicable" puzzles in the movie? This difference can be said to be the culprit of THE BOX, just like a man who chooses to wear a sexy looming woman when facing a woman, the audience may be confused after watching "Death Illusion", but the melancholy sentiment of the whole movie is revealed. It is quite fascinating and attracts people to solve the puzzles to find out, but THE BOX puts the main story of the story in front of the audience at a glance. Those puzzles are suddenly unnecessary for the audience.
Of course, if there is a good enough theme, perhaps the audience will want to study how the movie expresses this theme. Another problem with THE BOX is that this theme has been exposed as early as the "Introduction", a commonplace talk. Human nature issues run through the whole film, and there is delicacy, but it is more procrastination and mystery. As a result, the audience will be very depressed. After watching for nearly two hours, they are still confused, dizzy and bored by the plot. It turns out that the movie is about the theme that was guessed before watching the movie, and it will feel two. Hours were completely wasted. So when the original famous word "Button, Button" appeared at the end of the film, a handsome guy whispered "putain, Putain" next to him.
In addition, I don't like the ending very much. The too old-fashioned "unfinished" ending is not as memorable as "Death Illusion".
"Death Illusion" is not perfect, but because its puzzles and stories reflect each other, the shortcomings can be ignored; the many shortcomings of THE BOX cannot be ignored, but Richard Kelly is still Richard Kelly after all, and there are still many in the film. A lovely highlight. The story takes place in the mid-70s, so the whole film has a little retro tune from the soundtrack to the photography, and sometimes suddenly feels like watching an old film; the effects of those weird scenes are good or bad, and if it is good, it will cause a sense of horror. The bad ones, of course, become cold jokes. For example, the library and MOTEL scenes are not bad, and the mysterious figure played by Frank Langella is also reminiscent of the double-faced character Harvey in "The Dark Knight", as well as the heroine. In a scene where the mysterious man called, the heroine asked where the mysterious man was. The mysterious man said that she was looking at her. Then the heroine found a strange man in her backyard and kept watching her walking around the house, feeling weird. Somewhat horrified.
If you ask me what this movie says and expresses, I think I know it. But you ask me if I understand, ask me why those people have nosebleeds, why the male protagonist appeared in another place without dying in a car accident, and why the male protagonist appeared in one of the three "water columns" in the library and then appeared to him. On the bed at home, why are they in the suspended water, why those people with nosebleeds have to wait in line at the end, where is the sacred person of the mysterious person, why does he do this if he is an alien, if the couple who finally got the box don’t press the button? Will the protagonist die? What is the mystery in the library? Why the mysterious person makes the heroine hold his hand and the heroine loses consciousness like sleepwalking. Why is the nanny suddenly interested in the basement of the protagonist’s home when she sees out the window at night, MOTEL What is the meaning of the ceremony by the swimming pool, why the water in the swimming pool is so weird, why they hold the protagonist’s son into the mysterious liquid, where did they go...I think I can give some ambiguities to a few of these questions Uncertain answer, and the rest of me is completely at a loss.
three,
I didn’t fully understand it, but I wouldn’t study THE BOX like I did when I watched "Death Illusion". The fascinated boy.
PS: Looking forward to a powerful analysis article to solve those obscure puzzles in the film, I just want to be lazy and don't want to bother with it.
