Roman Polanski: I love shadows in movies

Just returned to Shenzhen to settle down, and I was exhausted. Half a month of vacation, it feels like a short while, eating, sleeping, visiting relatives and staying at home in a daze, while dealing with the bombardment of family members looking for girlfriends...

As soon as I left today, I found a sigh of relief. I am afraid to go home, there should be an embarrassed and polite smile here.

I don't know which of the four New Year's films you have watched. I watched "Detective Chinatown 2" in a small county movie theater that can accommodate hundreds of people at home. To be honest, I was a little disappointed. After watching it, I found that all the laughs were concentrated on Wang Baoqiang. In terms of the shocking lines, to be honest, such a series of movies is a bit fun and a bit dangerous.

Because I couldn't buy a direct train, I transferred the train for a day today, and when I had time to transfer to a city, I couldn't wait to find a movie theater to watch "Operation Red Sea". It's very burning, it's really burning enough, but it didn't inspire me to write a film review.

Of course, these are all digressions. Today, I mainly want to talk about the movie "Chinatown".

It's also "Chinatown". I don't know if watching "Operation Red Sea" is still in the commercial atmosphere, so I fell asleep three times while watching the movie "Chinatown" on the train. (Of course, I will not miss the plot, because if I am sleepy, I will pause the playback.)

In fact, it is not only the recommendation and introduction of this movie that has been seen in a book and magazine, but the subtlety and rules of its script won the 47th Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1975.

Let me mention here that "Chinatown" was nominated for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Score and many other awards, but they all fell through, because there was still a world-shattering film that year. The film of Crying Ghosts and Gods - Coppola's "The Godfather 2", think about it, it really means "you are born and you are born".

The reason why I say Chinatown is sleepy is because it tells the story so well.

The movie is a suspense and detective genre, but the whole movie does not have the plot twists and surprises that a suspense movie should have. Obviously, it is a very serious textbook movie, using the most standard script to write a story about a police officer Jack solving a case.

I don't know much about movie scripts, so I can't figure out how good the script is for this movie. But since so many masters recommend it, it must have its merits, so if you want to be interested in screenwriters, you may wish to take a look.

I won't go into details about the movie. By watching the movie "Chinatown", I went a step further to director Roman Polanski, so let's talk about him.

Roman Polanski

Roman Polanski is a frequent visitor to major film festivals. He is good at digging out the evils of human nature and criticizing the sins of human nature in film creation. He is known as the "Master of Sin" in the history of film. His works have always been good at excavating the darkness in the depths of human nature, and there is an aura of "desperation" in his bones.

In Roman Polanski, two things happened that made him desperate.

First, he directed the famous horror film "Rosemary's Baby" for Paramount Corporation, which was a huge success. The dark and terrifying atmosphere in the film shocked the public greatly, and a cult organization "Manson Family" recognized itself. For the "Devil Family" in the film, he plotted to take revenge on the director Polanski.

One night in August 1969, Manson ordered two of his men to break into the home of famous Polish director Roman Polanski in Beverly Hills, Hollywood. Six people, including actor wife Sharon Tate, who was eight months pregnant, were killed. A total of 102 stab wounds were found on the bodies of the deceased, all of which were shot several times. Sharon Tate was stabbed 16 times and died of blood loss along with the child in her womb. Nothing was missing in the house, and on the door was a word left by the murderer: "Pig," written in Sharon Tate's blood. And Polanski happened to be preparing for the filming in a different place, and survived.

Second, in 1977, Roman Polanski was accused of raping a 13-year-old girl, and the police arrested him. After 42 days of defense, Polanski, who felt hopeless, felt a biased treatment under the public opinion created by the media. Before the legal judgment was determined, he left the soil of the United States of America through "effective" means, flew to Paris, temporarily escaped the sanctions of the law, but never set foot on the soil of the United States again.

After Polanski was wanted by the United States for more than 30 years but never sent him to prison, she expressed her forgiveness to Polanski in front of the media after the girl had become a married woman and had children. , but the law does not give an exact answer.

These two events can be said to have had a devastating impact on Polanski's life. I think it not only destroyed his life, but also had a heavy blow to his spirit. One can imagine where the despairing breath revealed in his works comes from.

Just like the ending of the film "Chinatown", the original screenwriter Robert Donald wrote a happy ending, but Polanski insisted on his "dark" style, modifying the film so that the victim dies and the perpetrator lives. Injustice in the world.

The writers and Polanski are said to have quarreled over the ending.

But then again, the art of the work belongs to the art of the work, and the private life of the director belongs to the private life. Regardless of whether the sexual assault of Roman Polanski is true or not, we cannot deny the achievements of his works.

Since the new century, "Bitter Moon" and "The Pianist" are the pinnacles of this 60-year-old old man putting down the burden of grief and facing the pain.

"I like shadows in movies, but not in life." This quote comes from Roman Polanski.

I hope that everyone who likes movies can read the shadows in movies and walk out of the shadows in life.

Polanski's best films, from scripts, lines, characters to directors, are all excellent, they are truly immortal classics.

By coincidence, I saw two masterpieces in 1974 in a row. As the title of Chinatown, it has not become a clue to the movie, and its scenes only appeared at the end of life and burst into climax. The textbook script of the long admiration of the name did not bring much shock. It was nothing more than an orderly questioning. It was the so-called Chinese essence: Sacrificing the individual to make the greater self, and not tolerating American heroes, was thoroughly analyzed. Good film, but not right.

Jake Gittes: There's something black in the green part of your eye.

Evelyn Mulwray: Oh, that. It's a... it's a flaw in the iris.

    Jake Gittes: Flaw?

Evelyn Mulwray: Yes, it's a sort of birthmark.

  • Jake Gittes: He's rich! Do you understand? He thinks he can get away with anything.
