I appear when there is peace and goodness, and I leave when prosperity is prosperous. My existence is to maintain world peace, and my departure is a new beginning of the world. Rumbling trains pass by, I am not a landlord, I am not a politician, I am not a rich businessman, I am not a thug, I am a railway builder, I am a messenger to prosperity, like Jesus, protecting you.
Play the harmonica when it's time to speak, and talk when it's time to play the harmonica. I just want this land to prosper and healthy, no matter how great the hatred, no matter how attractive the money, no matter how beautiful the woman is. I just want the railroad to stretch indefinitely, meandering to the west, to the east, to the south, to the north, to keep hope alive, and for people to live and work in peace.

8.4/10 Replaying "Once Upon a Time in the West", the 436-page script co-written by three Italian masters is a simple story. It downplays the plot, adds more close-ups, and is extremely slow but very charming. Morricone’s soundtrack is even more impressive. Anti-going is the main thing. The progress of civilization, the torrent of history, and the knights, bandits, and sharpshooters will all become ancient races. The west is a thing of the past, and it is really a maddening sorrow.

170 minutes, the beginning, tense, slow, the setting is deeply western, the costume of a knight, the image of a tough guy, and the manliness is full. Close-up shots are more common in later Hong Kong films. The emphasis is on the demeanor of the characters, and the lack of inner activity.

Once Upon a Time in the West quotes

  • Morton: I got on board within sight of the Atlantic, and before my eyes close I want to see the blue of the Pacific outside that window.

Frank: I know where you got on. I was there too remember? To remove small obstacles from the track you said. Well there were a few.

  • Cheyenne: [about Harmonica] He not only plays. He can shoot too.

Harmonica: [to Cheyenne] Do you only know how to shoot? Or do you know how to cut too?
