Among the foreign directors, my favorites are the Coen brothers who are good at playing black humor, the downright pessimist Woody Allen and the always above the audience Kubrick. In the process of watching Kubrick's films, those who are greedy can enjoy the sensuality, those who are weak can taste loneliness, those who are sinful and greedy can face their fears, and those who are sympathetic and compassionate can find that there is also a holy realm in grief at the end of the road. . So it's not unreasonable that Tom Cruise can shine in Kubrick's films.
[Eyes Widespread] is undoubtedly the largest of Kubrick's films. Even the degree is much higher than the previous [Clockwork Orange]. While making this film, Kubrick was almost at the end of his life. But his strong desire for expression and innovative thinking are still unmatched by any young director. In such a treacherous film, despite the complicated and gorgeous costumes, the extravagantly lit dance floor, and the affectionate spring wine, one can still experience an indescribable sadness from the slightly bleak and humid night. And what is this psychedelic and soulful grief?
When the Japanese writer Haruki Murakami was middle-aged, he wrote "South of the Border and West of the Sun", which I think is his best work. The plot of the story is the same as [Eyes Widespread] to some extent. The couple who have been in love with each other for many years suddenly realizes the absurdity of the life they have experienced one morning, after any doubts and searches have come to an end. Only the rainy night, which never stops.
What is love in the end? If love can change rapidly and change day to day, then what is our courage to gamble? The male protagonist in Haruki Murakami's novels cannot find his first love, and he is unwilling to get his wife's forgiveness. He said that he always has an unfulfilled wish in his heart. Calling him loudly, keeping him up at night.
And Nicole Kidman in the movie was married for many years before she said she had fallen in love with someone during a trip. This kind of love is so strong that she can give up everything for it, just for a stranger who has a relationship. She doubted the truth of life for this. The husband is tormented by the scene in his mind of his wife cheating on someone, and he doesn't want to confront him anymore, and he goes to a taboo masquerade party at night, but he strays into a bigger mystery and cannot be freed from it.
At the end of the film, Kubrick didn't solve any of the mysteries, he just told her husband through Nicole Kidman that a person can't understand the meaning of life in a lifetime, let alone a night.
I don't know how many people can feel the indescribable beauty from this sentence. This kind of beauty is not unswerving love, not an impregnable marriage, and certainly not an affectionate understanding. This kind of beauty is that you clearly know the elusiveness of life, but you still love it and are willing to give everything to pursue the mirage that does not exist. It's like a battlefield where you will lose with your bare hands, loving someone you can never have.
In "Norwegian Wood", a prequel to "South of the Border and West of the Sun", Watanabe-kun lost his beloved son. He went back to the place where they used to walk together, wondering if Naoko had never loved him. It just happened to rain, and Haruki Murakami described it this way:
"It's as silent as the rain of the whole world on the grass of the whole world."
If I can love you so silently, then this is Kubri Give me meaning.
