Gentleman, what are you thinking?

This movie is fascinating. Details weave details, stories stack stories. Dense texture, surface is not smooth. Countless tentacles salvage the space of my consciousness. After watching this movie, my mind keeps going off and on. It's too hard for me to write a full review.

I would like to start with the fact that Harvard doctors are naturally open-eyed and talk nonsense.

Alice asks the Harvard doctor questions, and she can't possibly get an answer. Alice asked him if he was beautiful, and the answer he gave was "beautiful", but he didn't even look at her. Alice asks him where the party was, and he tells Alice that he's taking care of Sigler who's not feeling well (actually Mandy who's overdose). Alice asked him if he had any sexual fantasies with the naked female patient, and he confidently replied "no". Because the Harvard doctor is not Harvard, the Harvard doctor is a doctor, he is used to operating language in the established procedures of identity, and he is not sensitive to actual phenomena. He remembered that the person was a nanny, but he couldn't remember the name of the nanny. He remembered that the two beauties were models, but he couldn't remember the names. Just like the rich man Siegler suddenly couldn't say the name of beauty queen Mandy.

The Harvard doctor was even confident that he was never jealous because he was a husband, and that was the right thing to do.

Alice's language is delicate and nuanced, and she can clearly describe her feelings and dreams. She used to be a gallery manager and is now unemployed looking for a job. Alice is not the manager Alice, it is Alice.

There's a difference between a Harvard doctor and a plutocrat Sigler. Siegler has "incorrect" secret spaces. When he has an "accident" "upstairs" with his prostitute Mandy, the doctor who helps him keep a secret can come to the rescue. The hall is the dance floor of procedural justice, and the "upstairs" is the secret space where the Hungarians seduce Alice to. This space is also mirrored in the adventures of Harvard doctors. Of course, because Siegler needs Nick to help him play the piano and a Harvard doctor, his reception will also be invaded by people from different classes.

The Harvard doctor doesn't have the latitude to take risks, and his money is at the disposal of taxi drivers and clothing store owners. The prostitute he was looking for might even infect him with AIDS. His opportunity to peek into the secret spaces of the rich is trouble for him. The Harvard doctor couldn't leave his role as a doctor, so when he faced desires and fears, he was always grateful to be interrupted. Alice said she was relieved when she found out that the person she wanted to cheat on left. She helped Harvard doctors to express unconscious feelings.

What was he thinking about? His space to think is always limited. The most important thing is to be a professional gentleman, eyes wide shut, so the operation is safer.

Eyes Wide Shut quotes

  • Victor Ziegler: Bill, I... I know what happened to you last night. And I know what's been going on since. And I think you just might have got the wrong idea about one or two things.

Dr. Bill Harford: [feigning ignorance] I'm sorry Victor, but... what the hell are you talking about?

Victor Ziegler: Please, Bill... no games. I was there. At the house. "The house". I saw you, Bill. I saw everything.

  • Victor Ziegler: Bill, I don't think you realize how much trouble you got yourself into last night just by going over there. Who do you think those people were? Those were not just some ordinary people. If I told you their names... no, I'm not going to tell you their names... but if I did, I don't think you'd sleep so well at night.
