tragic villain

The film has only one clear main line: thwarting General Hammer's plan, and one side line: Nicolas Cage's protagonist persuades Sean Connery, an old agent, to join the operation.

This movie is actually a very typical Hollywood personal heroism movie. Here, General Hammer wants to single-handedly demand that the nation face up to the soldiers who gave their lives for the country and get no response; and Gusby and Mason single-handedly disarm the missiles with the entire commando killed. But the two kinds of heroes are different. The former is a tragic hero who must sacrifice himself in the end; the latter is a big hero who, as the protagonist, will definitely solve the danger and achieve the final result, because evil cannot overcome righteousness.

But in fact, they are all just fighting for their own beliefs. General Hammer is not evil. He only represents the disadvantaged groups that are opposed to the state. They cannot get the recognition they deserve from the state, and Hammer has negotiated with the state many times. To no avail, he finally appeared as a traitor. So, he needs a tragic ending, he died as a protector.

The Eight Immortals crossed the sea and each showed their magical powers. "Patriotism is an evil virtue." Sure enough. All kinds of thoughts are intertwined, which is thought-provoking.
