Revenge and original sin

In this article, I will analyze the semiotics and psychoanalysis in the film Kin Kaneko directed by Park Chan Wook from three aspects. This is a film about revenge, which involves the concept of original sin. Just like the movie poster, the revenge murderer gold is made into the image of the immaculate Virgin, which embodies a kind of contradiction in life.

The dream of gold
can be explained by the analysis of dreams . Freud said that dreams are the satisfaction of wishes. The dream of gold just represents the fulfillment of her wish.
The image of the dog itself gives people the impression of begging for mercy. The dog has the head of Teacher Bai and the body of the dog is tied to a shelf. Obviously it represents the impression of Teacher Bai in the heart of Jin. It is like a dog, one A kind of replacement (displacement). The dog's barking is also very similar to the barking of Teacher Bai when he was tied to a stool and was held by a gun against his head by gold
. The scene of the incident, in a white snowy field, snow white represents purity, just like in the movie. I mentioned eating tofu several times and the authentic white cake behind it, which symbolizes that there is no sin. Later, Teacher Bai's blood splashed all over the place, which actually meant that if Bai was killed, Jin Jin's own purity would also be tarnished.
The scene of the cliff is a manifestation of anxiety. The crimes committed by the gold are forced to occur. The cliff is an experience of this kind of desperate situation. It was Jin Jin's excuse to kill Bai on the edge of the cliff. She was forced to kill him when she was in desperation. The thunder in the environment is also a representative of punishment, just like Bai has been punished by the heavens, and Jin's black clothes similar to uniforms (which she later wore) have a symbol of authority and coldness. Kaneko thought that he was killing him as a kind of executor.

Symbols in the
film There are many obvious symbols in the film.

Red eyeshadow. Jin Jin has been wearing red eyeshadow since she was released from prison, and it was not until Teacher Bai was killed that she washed off the eyeshadow. Red represents blood, hatred, and desire, and is an important mark for gold to remind himself of revenge. On the other hand, gold painted with red eyeshadow turned himself into an image of an avenger, just as some tribes painted colors on their faces, believing that they could become brave warriors in battle. At the same time, it also showed that Kaneko didn't want to reduce herself to a murderer, but wanted to separate her red eyeshadow from her real self.

Gun and Dharma Sutra. The Falun Sutra hides a drawing of a pistol given to Jin by a Korean female spy. The Dhamma Sutra itself is a doctrine on how to liberate yourself. And Kaneko's revenge plan is also an act of hope for self-liberation. Linking the Dhamma Sutra with the pistol is actually a metaphor for self-liberation through killing. Kaneko later inlaid his special custom-made silver head on the gun. That head looked like the head of some kind of goddess. Kaneko said that everything must be beautiful. This further shows the subconscious mind of Kaneko who wants to make himself a dead executor. Another metaphor of the goddess can be regarded as a symbol of original sin. Some Christian theologians believe that man has original sin and sin nature. The existence of original sin isolates mankind from God and causes mankind to suffer for life and cannot be liberated.

classroom. Teacher Bai was finally killed by the parents of the child victims in the abandoned school prepared by Gold. This scene obviously has a certain meaning. The family sits on the student's desk, and Jin is standing in front of the podium with authority in the black uniform mentioned earlier, forming a pattern similar to listening to a book in class. As a result, the family took all the incitement to gold as a matter of course, and even the low-level lie of "taking the ransom to buy a yacht" did not make people suspect. The classroom was originally a symbol of purity, but the family members debated whether to execute the sinner or call the police. The police detective's guarantee prompted them to reveal the primitive and brutal human nature. The last person solved the sinner with a single knife, and the process was pathologically "rational." Even considering how to deal with a large amount of blood, his life was also very "practical". The evil side of human nature was even more naked when killing people and dividing money. This once again embodies the concept of original sin, as the director once said in an interview: "I want to ask two questions in the film, one is'is revenge justified?' and the other is'revenge satisfies the avengers. Is it?’ My personal conclusion is of course that revenge is not necessary, but humans always have a lot of desires like revenge. Although it is meaningless, it can always make you immersed in it and cannot extricate yourself. I want to discuss this kind of paranoia of people. "

There are many other symbols in this film, such as the glass ball of the little boy, which symbolizes the source of the guilt of gold. The bedclothes of Jin Jin on the sickbed in the prison and the woman next to him were single white and one black. The hearts on them also symbolized Jin Jin's seemingly innocent image and so on.

The last illusion of gold.
After killing Professor Bai, Gold washed away the red eyeshadow in the bathroom, and then saw the murdered Hongmu squatting in the bathroom smoking. This is obviously caused by the illusion of gold, which is produced by a person's subconscious. Among them, Hongmu's 19-year-old appearance was actually imagined by Kaneko. It is an image created by the superposition of multiple roles. Therefore, it is very similar to Kaneko's 19-year-old young lover. She thinks that a 19-year-old boy should be smoking like that. . And she was originally happy to open her mouth to tell Hongmu that she had killed Teacher Bao, but Hongmu suddenly turned into a 19-year-old appearance, tied the gold with gold to Teacher Bai, and then used compassion. He watched her leave with disappointed eyes. It proved that after the revenge, she did not really "atone for her sins." When faced with the Hongmu in her subconscious, she was still a sinner, not forgiven, and not spiritually liberated. She will always live in the shadow of indirectly killing that child.

So far, the film touches on the eternal theme of the revenge story-hatred will not die because someone dies. Even if gold is stuffed into the pure and white cake before the curtain ends, the guilt of revenge does not end.

  • Geum-ja Lee: Listen carefully. Everyone make mistakes. But if you committed a sin, you have to make an atonement for that sin. Atonement, do you know what that means? Big Atonement for big sins. Small Atonement for small sins.

  • Mr. Baek: Ma'am, there is no such thing as a "perfect person"...
