Is this just a dream?

I watched it twice before I understood the ins and outs of the story.
It took me a long time to really like this movie.
David Lynch used montage's film technique and Freud's psychological theory to interlace illusory dreams and reality.
When reality and ideas go against their wishes,
people are prone to indulge in dark illusions and imaginations.
But eventually there will be a day when it will return to reality, the
strong contrast, unbearable, towards destruction.

The feeling about the illusory dream is very strange.
Is it a dream that you once had or did it really happen?
Which is the dream? Which is the reality?
Or is this life just a dream?
