crime and punishment

Whip was certainly a great pilot, but not a great captain, not even a great man.
Sex, alcohol, drugs, this was his state two hours before takeoff. And even on the plane, the wine is still in hand. Judging by his calmness, this is no accident. So even if the plane lands safely, he's still a bastard who ignores everyone's lives. He was not worthy of the applause of the whole plane after he broke through the bad weather and started a smooth flight, but while enjoying the applause and shouting to the passengers, he unscrewed the bottle cap and poured in spirits. .
But the mechanical accident is a fact, and it is also true that Whip did his best to save, and saved most of the lives in an unconventional way. The crash of all 10 pilots' simulated flight shows that his judgment at that time was impeccable. To put it jokingly, maybe pumping high also helped him come up with this out-of-the-ordinary method.
I remember that there was a famous person who scratched the car while driving on the road. The other party should be fully responsible, and there was no objection. He also took pictures and signed a group of friends. As a result, the female compatriots in his car were angry but had to call the police. The police came and found that the Celebrities don't have a driver's license.
Of course you can say that your fault was not the cause of the accident, but no theory backed by it can strictly prove the whole truth. You never know if you could have made a better decision if you hadn't been drinking or using drugs. Yes, I can't think of a better possibility, but it can never be proven.
In the end, Whip was only sentenced to five years, which is obviously not commensurate with the six murders, so the jury definitely considered the conclusion that mechanical accident was the main cause. But if you make a mistake, you will be punished.
As for Whip, he came back and poured out all the alcohol because he was afraid of guilt. He thought that no one knew that he had drunk. Punishment, but all this is just to make the heart feel better, not real repentance. So after learning about the toxicology report, I continued to drink. Because since someone is waiting to sentence him, he doesn't need to punish himself. Especially on the eve of the hearing, he got an oracle-like binge and then sobered up by taking drugs. Is this a joke? And this self-imposed exile before the execution war made his low self-control even more obvious.
The movie's shifts in the characters' minds are all too abrupt, and Whip feels a little guilty for being drunk, but never to the point of remorse, making the sudden admission of alcoholism seem inadequate at the hearing. And Nicole appeared in the image of a drug addict, and still turned a deaf ear in the face of all kinds of warnings about not injecting. Such a person suddenly turned his back on evil, not only quit drugs himself, but also led others to be kind.
The movie has a good theme, but the unfolding is a little jerky and underwhelming.

Trivia:
1. The film was inspired by a real disaster, Alaska Airlines Flight 261, which crashed at a speed of 13,300 feet per minute due to a horizontal stabilizer failure. At that time, the pilot tried to control the speed by flying the plane upside down, but it was not as lucky as in the movie, and it failed in the end.
2. The film gave Denzel Washington his first Oscar nomination in 10 years, the last time he was nominated for "Training Day" in 2001.
3. Olivia Wilde and Dominique McElligott were both considered for Nicole.

    Whip: What life?

  • Hugh Lang: [to Whip] The FAA and the NTSB took 10 pilots, placed them in simulators, recreated the events that led to this plane falling out of the sky. Do you know how many of them were able to safely land the planes? Not one. Every pilot crashed the aircraft, killed everybody on board. You were the only one who could do it!
