A good movie tells you a positive truth, but makes you think twice

After you finishing this movie, you think back. There is nothing important. It's just life, all the small things around. It's not a regular drama that you would think of. There is no thrilling scenes, which makes you excitcited. There is no crime, no killing, no CIA or FBI. However, magically, it kept me awake for all the three hours.

So, when I think back, I realised that it not only kept me awake, but kept me thinking, all the time. It is true that life is all about small things. But when you stop what you are doing right now, and think about these small things from a different angel, just like what Mason did with his photography, then, it becomes this movie.

Life is all about delimmas, getting married or not, keeping doing what you like or taking reponsibility for your family, have a big house or a small deparment... After facing these delimmas , you have to make your own decison. No one will tell you what is right or what is wrong. Even years after you made your decisions, you still didn't know whether they were right or wrong. So, I really like the words Mason Senior told his son when M Junior was sad after his girlfriend breaking up with him." You don't need to take resoponsiblity of anyone but yourslef, and you have to believe in yourself." The power that makes you stick to your decisions, is not the fact whether your decision is right or wrong , but the believe. You believe that the decision is right, or the decison is the best for you.

I didn't try to figure out what this movie is trying to tell me. And I don't think it is trying to tell me anything. It throws a lot of questions to you and makes you think twice.

The saddest thing is that life is getting more and more boring. The boy with shining eyes will eventually become a lifeless and boring boy. Talking or hysterical quarrels will always linger, life will always only get worse and worse, running all the way to death. At a slow speed that tortures people to death. The passage of time in the movie is from the Goblet of Fire to the Half-Blood Prince, from Bush to Obama, from xbox to iPhone, deliberately and vulgar.

Photography already illustrates the simplest truth: time is the best artist. An ordinary old photo must be "beautiful". This inevitably raises a theoretical question. When time is the biggest gimmick in this feature film, what is the value of "drama" and "relocation"? What if this is a 12-year documentary? Do we still need a director?

Boyhood quotes

  • Dad: [Mason Jr. bowls a gutterball] Alright, don't worry about it.

Mason: I wish I could use the bumpers...

Dad: You don't want the bumpers, life doesn't give you bumpers.

  • Samantha: [as the family leaves their house for the last time before moving] Goodbye, yard! Goodbye, crepe myrtle! Goodbye, mailbox! Goodbye, box of stuff Mommy won't let us take with us but we don't want to throw away. Goodbye, house, I'll never like Mommy as much for making us move!

Mom: Samantha! Why don't you say goodbye to that little horseshit attitude, okay, because we're not taking that in the car.
