In fact, the movie has only one story. Although it happened in different eras and involved various themes-freedom, love, and courage, the most striking theme, in my opinion, is resistance, resistance to existing rules. Against slavery, against authority, against secular prejudice against same-sex love, against conspiratorial entrepreneurs, against the violence of insane asylums, against the oppressive rule of clones, and even against their own beliefs.
Unfortunately, the story of the original book itself is relatively conventional, and it is difficult to stand out from the stand alone, so it can be said that this is a movie supported by emotions rather than plots, and the length of nearly three hours obviously makes this support a little weak.
Some original writers feel that the story of Xingmei has been deleted too much, but I think it is simply too good. The "Oh, it turns out that this is all a government conspiracy" in the original book is really... It is estimated that the author felt that the story was too cliché and superfluous at the end of the story. Although the deletion of this paragraph reduces the complexity of the story, it makes the core theme more prominent.
