The rest of the day

The Remains of The Day-1993 has

been a noisy day in the past few days.
There is no time to watch movies for several days.
When I returned to the movie, I actually chose this one: The Remains of The Day, the most elegant translation of the name of a Chinese drama in my mind: Long Day Leaving Marks, or Leaving Marks in the Day.
Because this movie is quiet enough and dull enough.
The English translation is "the rest of the day", and this expression alone is enough to make people intoxicated. You may not understand when you are young, but after time has passed, you will understand what is left after time.
Day by day, perhaps plain as water, or passionate.
In the end, we will all grow old, we will all go downhill, we will all leave.
A manor, a lord, an emotion... All these things will leave with time. After the time slipped away, where did these things go?
Kazuo Ishiguro wrote such a heart-wrenching novel.

Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson were not young when they made this film, but they both returned to middle age in the film and contributed a very exciting rivalry.
The story is about a British house, a housekeeper and servant. There was a period of time when I was obsessed with these British servant cultures. For example, American Robert Altman filmed "Gosford Park", expounding the relationship between master and servant.
I like this kind of story because of a kind of heritage.
China and the United Kingdom, our great countries with a long history, will have such a kind of hierarchical charm that is deeply rooted in the hearts of the people. Originally, it may only represent class, but over time, it has become a kind of culture.

About father and son.
Old Stevens is about to die, middle-aged Stevens is in full swing. The relationship between the two is not as close as an ordinary father and son, but as delicate and restrained as a Chinese or Japanese. He didn't even go to see him immediately after hearing the news of his father's death, but continued to be by Darlington's side to complete his work. For him, the rigorous and seriousness of the profession of servants is the most precious wealth he has obtained from his father.

About master and servant.
Sir Alex Ferguson is almost the only way Stevens knows the outside world. Everything he has learned about the world, about being in the world, about life comes from Darlington, and their relationship is like a father and son. Just as Monkey King thought for the sake of Tang Seng after his apprenticeship, Zhuge Liang did his best for Liu Bei, Stvens' respect and love for Sir Alex is even stronger than that of his biological father.
Even if Darlington supported the Nazis, even if he was opposed after the war, Stevens still supported his gentleman master as always, never abandoning him, and deeply believed in his master's purity and nobility.

About men and women.
Feelings are very private in the mansion. Stevens didn't dare to tell Kenton about ordinary things like touching romance novels during the break. Of course, Stevens not only hid the feelings of men and women in his heart, he also hid many of his thoughts in his heart. Regarding the Jewish maid, Kenton can still force Stevens to express his emotions, but no one has ever spoken about the feelings between them. Kenton told Stevens that he was talking about his little actions by Benn, and everything was obvious, but Stevens still blessed them politely. When he saw Kenton crying, he even continued to discuss work with her.

About the paparazzi, about the mansion.
Hugh Grant is actually the paparazzi. It's just that his topic is politics.
All the magic is actually in this mansion. As long as he is in the mansion, Stevens is a manager, he just wants to serve the master. Unlike Kenton, he really never dared to step out of the house, as if once he left, his soul was not his own. In the mansion, he did not dare to express himself, he did not dare to love or hate, he did not dare to be who he was.
The war ended and the owner changed, and 20 years have passed. He was finally determined to make up for everything in the past.
Kenton said that when she first left, she was not happy at all because she felt like she was angry with Stevens. However, the daughter was born and the family reunited. It turns out that the husband has always loved him, and he has always loved him.

It turns out that 20 years later, the passion that everyone thought has faded. However, the passion has been faded away, but the years have left us with another emotion.
Can't tell, but buried deep.
What was left after the years slipped away was the kind of unspeakable but heartbroken feeling.

The Remains of the Day quotes

  • Miss Kenton: [about a new housemaid] You don't like having pretty girls on the staff, I've noticed.

    [teasing]

Miss Kenton: Might it be that our Mr Stevens fears distraction? Can it be that our Mr Stevens is flesh and blood after all and doesn't trust himself?

Stevens: [with the faintest trace of a smile] You know what I'm doing, Miss Kenton? I'm placing my thoughts elsewhere as you chatter away.

Miss Kenton: ...then why is that guilty smile still on your face?

Stevens: Oh it's not a guilty smile. I'm simply amused by the sheer nonsense you sometimes talk.

Miss Kenton: It *is* a guilty smile. You can hardly bear to look at her. That's why you didn't want to take her on, she's too pretty.

Stevens: Well, you must be right Miss Kenton, you always are.

  • Miss Kenton: I don't know what my future is. Ever since Katherine, my daughter, got married last year, my life has been empty. The years stretch before me and if only I knew how to fill them. But, I would like to be useful again.
