Among the movies I've seen recently, "Room" is a surprise. I watched it twice, the second time was the same as the first time, and I still burst into tears at the end.
At the beginning of the film, the story in the "room" is told from the perspective of the little boy Jack. In Jack's innocent and poetic language, the room is not a closed and cold space. He will name the objects in the room and talk to them. Say good morning and good night. Until Jack celebrated his 5th birthday, this room still felt like a heaven to him. On the contrary, for Jack's mother Joy, the room is nothing short of hell.
And Jack is different, Jack's world is pure, never stained with dust. It can be seen that Joy in the film has a numb and forbearing expression most of the time, and only loses control in a few shots. Because the room is tantamount to the end of life for Joy, who has lost his freedom, a kind of virtual life. Only when he is with his son Jack, does it appear a touch of reality. She never imagined that her freedom would be ruined because of her act of kindness a few years ago. Years of closed life, isolation from the outside world, and separation from the original life track made Joy's life like a desperate beast.
However, a beast that has been tamed and obedient cannot completely forget the mountains and jungles. That's an instinct. So when Joy told Jack about "The Count of Monte Cristo" and "Alice in Wonderland", in her heart, it is estimated that she did not completely give up the possibility of escaping the room. That's why she came up with a plan to escape.
The first half of the film is full of ups and downs. When Old Nick took Jack out of the room, the background music sounded as if to herald the possibility of freedom. With the increasingly intense music, Jack, who saw this world for the first time after escaping the room, widened his eyes. The bright blue sky, the gradually receding trees, the streets. Just a small slice of the world is enough to surprise Jack, he is only 5 years old, and the world is so beautiful that every scene that comes to his eyes is different. Each one he had never seen before.
Splitting the "room", when Jack successfully rescued himself and his mother, the physical bondage has completely disappeared at this moment. In the film, the doctor said something to Joy. "The most important thing you did was to rescue him while he was still plastic."
When the shackles on the body are gone, how can the shackles on the heart be opened? Re-adjusting and embracing a territory that is unfamiliar and expansive to them is the subject of the second half of the film. For Jack, all he had to do was to get to know the world well, but for Joy it was far from the case. How should she face the various changes that happened after she left, and how should she return to her original life track little by little, like a normal person. Divorce of parents, separation from teenage friends, and teenage years when I was destroyed. Joy, who has returned to the real world, is no longer an innocent girl, she has become a mother, she has to heal the unbearable memories of the past few years, and she has to face all the strangeness and vulnerability alone , This is far from what a child who has just passed his fifth birthday can understand. When the repair failed, the despair in her heart even made her give up Jack and choose suicide.
From heaven to hell, just a thought.
The room is a symbol, and the redemption between mother and son in the film is the real theme of the movie "The Room". The birth of Jack saved Joy, who was desperate in life, as Joy said in an interview. "Everything is different, he is so beautiful. I just know, I must keep him safe." Raising and caring for Jack has become the driving force behind Joy's sudden change of identity.
The room was a paradise, for Jack. So he would say to his grandmother:
"Sometimes I miss being there, no matter which direction I go, there's no end to it, and my mom is always there."
What Joy protects is not only Jack's growth and daily life, but also a clean world in the eyes of a five-year-old. This is Joy's redemption for Jack.
Jack, who rescued his mother from the room with his wisdom and courage, cut his own hair and gave it to his mother after suicide. He wanted to help her regain her strength. This is Jack's redemption for Joy.
The little boy's love for his mother is pure and selfless, so when he found out that there were no candles on his fifth birthday cake, he was originally angry, but after being hugged by his mother, he just said, "Wait until I turn 6 next week" Now, you'd better light a real candle.
So after he rolled out of his breathless blanket, he just said, "I hate you!"
So after his mother left, he sat on the ground and played with toys quietly, because that was what his mother wanted him to do.
So when Mom apologized in front of him and admitted that she wasn't a good mom, he just said, It's okay, Don't do it again. But you're Ma.
Jack is a true angel, his love is pure, kind, and does not expect anything in return. A child is always a child, and there is no existence tainted by the filth of the world. Seeing that room through the child's eyes, the narrow room also becomes beautiful, and after he leaves the room to see the wider world, he also wants to go back to see it. The room is no longer the same room, the closed door opened, and the room has changed, and for Jack, who has grown up, it has also become smaller. However, for the innocent Jack, it was also the paradise he used to be. He said goodbye to the potted plant, goodbye chair one, goodbye chair two, goodbye table, goodbye wardrobe, goodbye sink, goodbye skylight, and finally had mom say goodbye to the room.
Goodbye is goodbye. To say goodbye is to never come back. And he knew that he was saying a final goodbye to the room.
He didn't realize yet, the freedom that was restricted during the years of staying in the room. Because Jack is always Jack, for him, the room is heaven, the little world that belonged to him before, everything about himself, and more importantly, there is always a mother in the room.
What really realized the redemption of Joy was Jack's unstained love for himself.
Jack has a monologue at the end of the film.
When I was four I didn't even know about the world.
I didn't even know the world existed when I was four
And now me and Ma are going to live in it forever and ever.
Now my mother and I will live forever in this world forever
Until we're dead.
until we die
This is a street in a city in a country called America.
This is a street in a city in a country called America
And Earth, that's a blue and green planet...
Earth is a blue and green planet
always spinning so I don't know why we don't fall off.
And keep spinning I don't know why we don't fall
Then there's Outer Space,
And outer space
and nobody knows where's heaven.
no one knows where heaven is
Ma and I have decided that because we don't know what we like,
Mom and I made a decision because we didn't know what we liked
We get to try everything.
So we have to try everything
There are so many things out here.
There are so many things in this world
And sometimes it's scary
sometimes scary
but that's ok.
but that's ok
Because it's still just you and me.
Because you and I are still together
Granny said to Jack, "No one can be strong alone, we all help each other and make each other stronger."
Joy said, "goodbye, room" with inaudible lips before taking Jack to say goodbye to the room.
Snowflakes suddenly fell outside the door. I hope that Joy at this moment really bids farewell to the room, because the world outside the door is still very big, waiting for her and Jack.
