A Trial Interpretation of "Neither Come nor Go" from Nolan's "Creed"

I have been watching "Creed" for half a year, the plot is quite shocking, I have always wanted to write but dare not write, the concept of entropy increase and decrease due to things is really cutting-edge, plus the "fragmentation" of film clips, after watching the film The grasp of emotions is consciously not well-adjusted; however, the film resources have not been released, and until now, there has been no chance to revisit it.

It happened that HKTV's "Midnight Lecture" program had three episodes about Lin Xi in a row. "Creed + Neither Come nor Go", the two instantly collided with unexpected fireworks in my mind.

HKTV program "Midnight Lecture"

Speaking of "Neither Come nor Go", Eason Chan's song was published on the album "H3M" in 2009, from the song title "Neither Come nor Go" to the lyrics of "Kechen", "Supersheng", "Cause and Effect" " and other images are inseparable from Buddhist thought, and the lyricist himself has repeatedly "understood the attachment of love and the impermanence of world affairs from the Buddha", so the Buddhist interpretation of this song is naturally an inescapable aspect.

However, what I have been brooding about is that the explanation of Buddhism is too philosophical and too nihilistic, while Eason Chan's interpretation method (whether it is the CD version or the live version) is very grand and even a bit pathetic, so I try to introduce "Creed" here. The plot gives more storytelling to this song.

When sailing, the crowd is without you
I am me and passers-by
When you pause, look through the beauty of autumn water with your smiling eyebrows
On the way back, the waves washed away you
Let the shadow grow long and fall asleep
Leave me rummaging through the rucksack in the dirt until I find myself
Because of this, there is an extra thorn in the palm of the palm, so I don't know if there is no sting
Just as if you have an old relationship but no past

Lin Xi is good at wrapping a set of grand ideas in a cliché love story, such as "Under Mount Fuji" and "People Coming and Going". When you look at the first paragraphs of "The Crowd Without You" and "The Eyebrows That Opened in Your Smile", you will think that It is to write "the one who makes my heart flutter". However, the plot in the second paragraph took a sharp turn. "Falling asleep" and "in the dung" seem to imply something, why should I "recover myself"?

The introduction of the "Creed" plot here can perfectly explain it.

When sailing, the male protagonist did not know Neil, and even Neil had not reached the time and space where the male protagonist was - "the crowd without you".

At a pause, the male protagonist and Neil began to get acquainted and became close friends from life to death - "Looking through the beauty of autumn water with your smiling eyebrows".

On the way back, the male protagonist went through the "time reversal" machine, and with the help of Neil, went through difficulties again and again - "the waves washed away you".

At the end, Neil blocked the bullet for the male protagonist at the critical moment "Su Sheng", and then the male protagonist and the audience understood that their last goodbye was actually a goodbye-"Ren back, can't afford to fall asleep".

In your smiling eyebrows, looking through the beauty of autumn water

The male protagonist can't stop here, for Neil's sacrifice, in order to complete the damn mission, "in the dirt, check the rucksack", get the key props left by Neil, "until you find yourself", and move on , has since become a tool man.

Neil's sacrifice is like a thorn in his heart. It's fake if it doesn't hurt, but what can it be; because the male protagonist's progress is Neil's retreat. When we didn't know each other, "just be with you, there is old love but no past".

So far, the story of "Creed" has been fully explained in this paragraph.

Who walks together still ends the same
Sadness and joy are inherited in the blood
No one can escape this kind of guest dust, but it happened to be from you
There is no destiny to be depressed before bowing your head
Stand up until you wake up
Blindly, I see the secrets come and go again and again and become myself again
Even if there is one more thorn in your life, you don't need to know
As if you had a plot but no story

The second verse expresses the final exhortation to the protagonist from the perspective of "reverse man" Neil.

As time agents, they have no choice but to do their duty - "Whoever walks together will end the same."

It's just that this time it happened that Neil came to help the protagonist—"but it happened to be yours."

However, is it really just a coincidence? Some film critics opened their minds, saying that the film seems to imply that Neil is the son of the male protagonist in the future, and he performed a "time reversal" to return to the past to save his father - "In blood, it is inherited. Sadness and joy".

In the face of arduous tasks, in the face of a powerful boss - "Before bowing your head, there is no fate to be discouraged".

Having experienced the unknown and blindness of time reversal again and again - "I saw the secret of heaven and came back and forth again and again".

Tian Ji is the use of "time pincer tactics", Neil, who woke up from "long sleep and can't afford to fall asleep", blocked the bullet for the male protagonist - "sleep until you wake up before you can stand up".

In the end, Neil did not forget to exhort the male protagonist, even if sacrificing for the mission seems like "an extra thorn", but he prefers to call it a bond. Here I will quote the lyrics from another classic work of Master Xi, "Spring and Autumn", "I didn't regret the Spring and Autumn for you. You haven't traveled thousands of miles with me. It's not enough for the plot to continue the story." Yes, Neil came to the male protagonist's time and space and established a bond, but it's not enough, it's not enough, their road is only halfway through, my end is your beginning, you have to finish our road, the story It is complete, "just be with you, there is a plot but no story". Before his death, Neil said the most touching words in the whole film: I am waiting for you at the starting point.

Ruyan handed you fire
Like fire but it didn't melt me
Looking back at the beginning, when loss is gain, is it possible
Painful as a song, music as a children's song
like you haven't been here

In this refrain, which is repeated twice, Lin Xi's words are both romantic and full of Buddhist philosophy.

To borrow a Buddhist allusion from Zhihu Gaozan’s analysis:

According to the "Tanjing", one day Master Yinzong gave a lecture at the Faxing Temple in Guangzhou. "Sometimes the wind blows the flag and moves. One monk says the flag is moving, the other monk says the wind is moving, and there are endless discussions. Hui Neng Jin said, it is not the flag that moves, not the wind, the benevolent is moved." So we can see that there are three levels of viewing things: First, Seeing the movement of the flag is naturally the most superficial level; second, seeing the movement of the wind, which is to observe the inner cause from the surface phenomenon; third, seeing that neither the movement of the flag nor the wind, but the heart, This shows that the transitions and changes of external objects are all caused by karma in the self, which is the deepest level.

If you compare the adversity between the male protagonist and Neil to "fireworks", this bond has a beginning and an end, "because I handed you fire", "but it didn't melt me"; there are gains and losses, "when loss is gain can". This is the moving level.

Observing the inner reason from the surface phenomenon is the "repeated exchanges and understanding of the secret" mentioned in the second verse. In a world where time is reversible, it is meaningless to say "come" and "go". As long as you use the "time reversal" machine to keep going back and forth and travel through different time and space, you can still repair the "painful song" again and again and create it again. "Let's like a children's song". This is the wind level.

But in such a world, what are you most afraid of? The most fearful thing is like Neil, just like the loop statement encounters the condition of exit do, once it pops up, it cannot be restarted. Even if you have the super power of manipulating time, you cannot transcend the laws of life and death.

So there is the second chorus.

If the flower is overgrown, there is no fruit
If you can cross the road again
Just pretend it was on the Shroud Lake at first, right?
what to plant, what to pluck
Like I've never been here

This last chorus is more like writing a parallel time and space to the whole story. This is the heart level.

In the face of Neil's sacrifice, in theory, the male protagonist can still use "time reversal" to go back to that moment to stop the shooting or find another dead ghost, etc. - "If you can cross the road again."

But if the space-time is "sliced", it is also theoretically that the Neil who has such a space-time is still dead - "like a flower, there is no fruit after superbirth".

These two non-contradictory relationships completely overturn the causal theory that "the past affects the present, and the present affects the future".

On the contrary, according to the "multi-history theory" of quantum mechanics, what we can grasp is only the present state, and "let the past be in the past".

If the past and the present are separated, then there is no need to be obsessed with "looking back at the beginning", but "just take it as the beginning, is it okay to walk on the lake".

This "initial", this parallel space-time, can be free from the condition of breaking out of the cycle, "whatever is not planted, what is harvested".

If this is the case, it is probably true that they will never be separated.

However, will this initial initial state be, "Like I haven't been here, haven't been there"?
