Another version of The Yards

I watched James Gray's The yards and we own the night for two consecutive days. Although the two films had a 7-year difference in shooting time, the similarity was as high as 90%. First of all, the leading roles are Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Wahlberg (and they are both brothers) and the beautiful female protagonists. The story is about the opposition between good and evil, the same gang tune, the same strong decadence, and they have also won the Cannes Palme d’Or Nominate. The only difference is that the two films focus on different people. In The yards, Mark Wahlberg is the leading figure, a kind of weak old man, who finally sees through the dark justice outbreak, but unfortunately this image does not suit him no matter how you look; Joaquin in We Own The Night changed the slightly cunning in the yards In the image, he played the rebellious brother who changed the evil to the righteous. In fact, James Gray still has his own style in making such films. The decadent nostalgic atmosphere is mixed with a little heroism. Compared with other gangster films that mainly focus on bloody violence and gunfighting, there are several police and gangster films. Work harder on the characterization. It’s just that the same director has made two such similar films in a row. It feels like a waste of film.

  • Joseph Grusinsky: I don't need any more guns in my life, that's for sure. But you should have one to be safe. It's better to be judged by twelve than carried by six.
