This is the first time I've written a long review of a movie, because I want to rant too much about this movie, and I can't say a good or bad one.
First of all, of course, the director's rhythm is properly controlled, the actors' acting skills are deep into the play, and the soundtrack is appropriate... After all, it can be nominated for an Oscar... but! What I want to complain about is his screenwriter. The whole process of watching made me very unhappy, and after the end, I also felt very bad. It is not that the plot is garbage and the logic is not logical, but some values revealed. I do not agree, so the screenwriter and director want to The core content of the expression also fails to impress me.
1. Bad characters
I don't know what to say about the people in this town, but I don't like them anyway. The biggest feeling is selfishness, seeing things from my own perspective and doing what I think is right.
The most obvious is the heroine, she can urge the police to make a billboard for the truth she wants, but she should not resort to violence to hurt innocent dentists and set fire to the police station, and she should not evade responsibility. The act of bringing the murderer to justice is contradictory.
Police Dixon also showed a very bad image of the police, abuse of power, violence and wounding. This is very obvious needless to say.
The police chief seems to be a well-respected and good man. He is still trying to solve the case in the advanced stage of cancer, but isn't this what he should do? Why does he and the others feel aggrieved? In his position to seek his own government, since you are still on the job, continue to do your work. If you want to recuperate, please leave your post and recuperate at home in peace. As the policeman in charge of the town's security, since someone has had an accident under your rule, who are you not looking for?
The rest of the police station, I don't know if this case is really difficult to solve, but as an audience I didn't see your efforts, except for the chief, none of them are working seriously, and they are lazy every day. Dixon beats people at the gate of the police station. No one came out to stop it, it was obviously a group of people with no police ethics, and it was no wonder that the heroine thought it was the police's fault that the case was not solved.
Small town people, who weakly sympathizes with whom? At the beginning, when the heroine's daughter died, I sympathized with the heroine. Now that the director is dying, she sympathizes with the director again. The blame is turned to the heroine. There is no accurate view of right and wrong? And there is no actual action beyond the statement. Whether it is the investigation of the case or the resolution of the conflict between the heroine and the police station, or even intensifying the conflict, they are just a group of melon eaters who watch the fun and don't think it's a big deal.
Only two people did what I thought was right. One is the billboard renter. When he disapproved of the heroine continuing to press the chief, he still did the work he should do after receiving the next month's rent. This is the correct professional conduct; the police who hurt him apologized to him Later, he chose to forgive, which moved his kindness. The second is the son of the heroine. He must have been ostracized at school because of his mother's behavior. Although he complained and disapproved, he still understood his mother and helped her put out the fire together when the billboard caught fire; He was still arguing with his mother, but immediately came out to protect her when his father beat her up.
2. Bad values
I can see that the screenwriter wants to use a series of events developed by the three billboards to show the story of the heroine from complaining about others and using violence to control violence, gradually learning to restrain her anger and actively trying to find the truth, growth and redemption. But he blurred some important concepts of right and wrong, and some things are over when the heroine realizes that she is wrong? Does she not need to apologize and be held accountable to the public for her actions? Almost all the crimes in it are not properly punished by the law, which is horrific.
The heroine hurt the dentist and denied it, without apology and compensation.
The heroine set fire, lied and denied, and finally knew that she was wrong to blame the police and did not surrender. So the loss of the police department is only the other taxpayers?
Dixon seriously injured others, but was dismissed without legal responsibility.
The heroine's ex-husband set fire and was not punished.
In the end, the director's open ending also made the real murderer of his daughter not know whether he was arrested or not.
These criminals are not only not punished by the law, but they are not ashamed at all. Even as a show off, they are not worried about the people around them reporting their crimes. This is really terrible!
3. Bad town environment
The movie is very real, it really shows what small town life is like. This is a very "dead" town. I used to envy the rural town life in Europe and the United States, with beautiful scenery, lazy life and no competition in the world.
But if you live in a small town, you will find that, first of all, it is not safe here, there are no cameras on most roads, and there is no way to investigate a crime; secondly, everyone is lazy in their work, including the police, and their business ability is not good, and I want them to solve the case. I'm afraid it's going to be a waste of time; the third is indifferent legal view and not following the rules, the emperor is far away, and the police have become bully. In the prosecution, the heroine bravely stood up and took revenge with violence... Fourth, in a peaceful town, everyone has a life attitude of doing more than one less thing. Whoever comes out to provoke trouble is who is wrong. This town is filled with the atmosphere of "mourning", everyone speaks slowly, and there are no sunny and positive people. Would you dare to live in such a small town?
After watching the movie, I gained a lot of negative energy, and a crime-themed movie has an open ending.
