I have the same habit as many people. Before watching Disc 4, I pulled out the first few parts and reviewed them. Then I took the time to browse the comments and ratings of many people on Mtime. To be honest, I can't agree with many people's opinions. So I can't help but want to comment a few words to commemorate this set of secret agent movies that I like very much.
Just in order from newest to oldest.
"Disc 4" SDMS score: 83.5 points
Bird director did inject a lot of fresh things into this film, such as a sense of humor. Simon's gags won a lot of applause from the audience. At the same time, the upgrade of the film technology itself has also created a more exciting and tense visual effect. Many bridge sections have left a deep impression on me, such as the section of the Dubai Tower.
I also like the movie itself's extremely concealed display of emotional sidelines, allowing a secret to protect his wife's life and death to be revealed at the end, making such a hard movie suddenly pinch the audience softly. This trick really works. We've seen this effect before in The Bourne 2 (Bourne, after a life-and-death struggle, suddenly arrives at his assassin's daughter's house and apologizes to her, as if all of a sudden let us learn from a hero comic world, truly entered the world of hero life). This time, Hollywood's old tricks are repeated, and it is just right.
Of course, this movie is not so perfect. First of all, it has a common problem that is difficult for action blockbusters to overcome, that is, the weakening of the plot. A lot of times I have to think hard to remember the story details of the Bourne series or Disc 3 and Disc 4. It's cool to watch these movies, but the context of the whole story is easily forgotten. Everything is too fast, too messy, and too simple. Just like a Sichuan dish, all the flavors are buried behind the spicy, and it is difficult to aftertaste. Relatively speaking, I still miss those very classic action movies, "Die Hard", "Life and Death", etc., yes, and "Mission: Impossible 1", which is the perfect combination of action and story.
"Disc 3" SDMS score: 75.5 points
In contrast, this "Mission Impossible" has not received too much praise. This is a very neat Hollywood movie, and each section is a classic when taken out individually. I also personally think that both Tom Cruise and the villain gave the best performances in the entire series.
But the biggest flaw of this movie is the neglect of the identity of the agent itself. JJ Abrams made the role of Ethan Hunt like Arnold in "True Lies". His main job is to hide his identity and endlessly shoot out the bad guys. Turning "Mission: Impossible" into a shootout film has been difficult for many fans to accept. Moreover, the director also treated the scene that best shows the skills of the agents (Ethan rushed into a building in Shanghai to steal the "rabbit feet") as "silence is better than sound here", focusing entirely on the ensuing shootout. , this is really the most upside-down approach.
Oh yes, there is another practice that I don't like very much, but it is very popular now. It is that whichever location is attractive, the director will force the scene there. For example, in "Disc 3", why did "rabbit feet" suddenly appear in Shanghai? The whole story has nothing to do with China... and "Disc 4", why is it a good deal for two people to choose in the Dubai Tower?
It is true that the director's painstaking efforts to present a visual feast are worthy of recognition. But let’s go back to the question mentioned above, because the design of all the scenes is too deliberate and arbitrary, so that the audience seems confused in the development of the plot, and even the brain is almost in a state of stagnation in thinking. Relatively speaking, one of the main locations of Disc 1, Langley, the headquarters of the CIA, seems reasonable. I still prefer to see a movie where the story and the location are "one-body-mind". Give the visual feast a proper reason, and the story will elevate the visuals even more.
"Disc 3" didn't tell the audience what a rabbit's foot is at the end. Do you feel like you've been tricked?
"Disc 2" SDMS score: 69 points
Alas, this is the most distressing movie for me. Rather it didn't appear in this series. I don't like the way this movie is done so much, it's like a freak. John Woo uses his beautiful violent aesthetics and his countless slow motions to show the handsomeness of Liang Tang, but the whole movie is filled with a disgusting feeling.
Of course, the beginning of this movie is still very stylized. In fact, until Liang Tang breaks into the fortress like some great master, and steals the antidote through the disguise technique, this movie is still acceptable to watch. But after the last few minutes of motorbike stunts, and the opening of the two men's fists and legs, I was completely speechless.
I like John Woo very much. I think his early films are very good. His "Broken Sword" and later "Face Change" have brought a fresh feeling to Hollywood action films. But when he was so reckless in "Mission Impossible," I really think he ruined the series.
Of course, I found that a lot of people really liked this one, maybe Tom Cruise is just too handsome with his long hair.
"Mission 1" SDMS Rating: 89
In many reviews, this episode of "Mission: Impossible" doesn't get the praise it deserves. But in my opinion, he is well deserved the best, and even the all-time classic of spy movies. Whether it's the derangement of the film's opening action plan, Langley's theft, and the final train scene. This movie reveals from start to finish the cleverness and thrills that an agent movie should have, especially the cleverness, which is sorely lacking in the later films.
I also love the classic quality that Brian De Palma brings to the film, he doesn't shoot too much, but just grabs the viewer's attention. The most commendable thing is that until the last moment of the film, it is a suspense that leads the whole film. What a precious thing this is, in discs 2, 3, and 4, is there any suspense at all? It is precisely because of the high degree of unity in suspense and action that this special agent film makes people willing to applaud his story, not just the bridge.
