God may really exist

Alfonso Cuaron, who paid attention to "Roma", then learned that he is also the director of "Gravity". It seems that it is indeed not Alfonso who can make a movie like "Son of Man". Caron is none other than that.

Coincidentally, a few hours before watching this film, on the way home in the evening, I saw the rare Tyndall effect sky, combined with the theme behind this film, I can't help but think about some human beliefs. grand problem. Although it is obvious to me that this is unfounded worry, I guess this is also some of the ideas that Alfonso Cuaron hopes to convey to the current human beings through the film "Children of Men".

About this film, what people mostly notice are the difficult long shots that are unparalleled in the world. But if there is technology but no connotation, no matter how long the lens is, it is just a castle in the air. Through these long takes, the audience can be completely immersed in this apocalyptic dystopian allegorical world constructed by the director. Although the setting that human beings have lost fertility mentioned in the background of the film seems impossible now, it is the director's purpose to use the impossible setting to reflect some of the problems that do exist today. At this point, it can be said to coincide with the recent popular American drama "The Handmaid's Tale".

If "The Handmaid's Tale" is a vigilance against current human society and conflicts under the guise of apocalyptic sci-fi, and a very restrained rationality, then Alfonso Cuaron's "Children of Men", in my opinion , with a touch of mercy and sensibility like the perspective of God. The overall picture of the film is rather grim. Except for the dazzling and difficult long shots, many pictures use a very calm third-person perspective. At the same time, the voice-over is filled with a lot of soundtracks and sonatas of God's Bible temperament. Although the appearance of the tone is dead and powerless, the core contains a hint of the director's allegory and perceptual thinking about the current apocalypse. It made me wonder, if there is a God, how does God view human beings—the Sons of God?

If I said that I was materialistic and had no faith before watching this film, then after watching this film, my long-standing materialism was shaken, and I began to think about the meaning of belief and whether God really exists. , began to fantasize about the wailing of human beings under the apocalypse.

Related to this, at the moment when the baby broke out crying in the movie, the refugees in the refugee camp treated the baby like a god, bowing their heads and whispering, and the soldiers outside the refugee camp also stopped the fighting and gave the baby and his party a way to escape. There are many people who are kneeling directly on the ground. People may think, what is the meaning of this war? Isn’t the source of all conflicts actually because of this baby who is still in the swaddling clothes? It can be easily seen that at this moment, everyone has actually let go of each other's prejudices and become faithful believers.

But the roar that followed brought all the refugees, soldiers, and spectators back to reality, and the war reignited in an instant. The hero, heroine, and baby continued to flee for their lives, and the soldiers continued to use meaningless words. In war, God gave people an opportunity to redeem themselves, but human beings did not cherish it.

At the end of the movie, the hero who escorted the baby and the heroine died of exhaustion, and the cruise ship Tomorrow arrived like Noah's Ark, which represented the heroine and infant of the Virgin and Eve were finally saved. This is the end of the movie. Will the human world be like this? Freed from suffering, war, and conflict, the director did not answer, thus giving 10,000 possibilities to the future. But there is no doubt that even if the current world is full of all kinds of misery, even if the director may be desperate and pessimistic about the current society, but in this pessimistic darkness, Alfonso Cuaron must have seen a bunch of The highlight of human nature, that is, there is a pair of invisible "eyes of God" from a perspective other than human beings, observing human beings' every move, and will provide human beings with redemption when they are most desperate. But whether human beings can see this redemption, the final choice lies with human beings themselves.

The ending is a bit sad

So far, Caron has the best look and feel. It belongs to the kind of movie that has to be very powerful in every aspect and has to be made with almost no flaws. The strength of technology makes up for the weakness of the story (but even so, it is far beyond the reach of most disaster movies and science fiction movies). The chase scene in the car can dominate any action movie, and a scene of street fighting together with any war movie is enough to beat the dust.

  • Julian Taylor: Y'know that ringing in your ears? That 'eeeeeeeeee'? That's the sound of the ear cells dying, like their swan song. Once it's gone you'll never hear that frequency again. Enjoy it while it lasts.
