He looked around

When I watched "Road" for the first time, I only watched a quarter of it, and I thought it was so weird. The tramp Pan Pano is as strange as the child-like Jessomena. I saw Fellini's autobiography later, and it turned out that there is nothing wrong with this feeling. Fellini said: Julieta believes that her interpretation of Jessomena makes her look weird and can earn sympathy.
When I watched "The Road" again, I was able to watch any silent film with patience. For "Road", it is nothing to say.
This time, as soon as Jessomena's sad face turned into innocent happiness, my eyes were involuntarily moistened.
"Road" is such a film: men and women are two parallel lines. There is no possibility of intersection.
"Road" received too much praise, making Fellini very unhappy about it. People may be like this, you say this is my best film, but I just say it is not. I prefer to say that the unknown film is something that I rely on. You haven't read it, so you can never understand it.
The story of "Road" is universal and close to the truth. This may indeed be an exaggeration. However, when you see the circus that Fellini has fascinated all his life with, it is actually a dream about human beings.
The experience of watching a circus in my childhood (watching a circus in China means watching acrobatics) is a fond memory that many people can hardly erase in their entire lives. No matter how time flies, the spinning trapeze will always linger in our memory.
So when Jesomina is sold to Panpano by her mother for 10,000 riel, we will be as full of longing as Jesomina, and then we will feel sad. However, the unknown is the most fascinating thing after all, we mustered up the courage to embark on a journey to a faraway place.
Soon reality followed. Jesomina discovers that following Panpano is more than just singing and dancing. Making a living turns all the winds of life into a place of chicken feathers. The strange thing is that we will fall in love with such a scary person. Our feelings do not seem to be under our control. When we fall into an incurable and dangerous situation, we imagine that the one we love will save us. In the end, the lover fled in a panic. It turns out that a lover is not omnipotent, just a layman who is too hungry to walk without a meal, and a fool who wants to spend his money with money. Until then we finally discovered: loneliness makes everything invisible.
Fellini shows the quality of a master here. He asked Pan Pano to run into Jesomina's soul on a boring afternoon a few years after he left. This soul is the song that trembles at the slightest touch. Of course, this is due to the Nino Lote in this film, a musician who has worked with Fellini for a lifetime. When Panpino heard the song again, Jesomiina had been dead for many years. At this time, the boring Panpano's heart began to think for the first time. He felt the pain of thinking the first time he thought. As Jesomina often said about him, why did he never think about it?
Fortunately, Fellini did not arrange a bad guy in the film. Let Jesomina's innocence end in eternal solitude. This is pure. Purity is the constant morality in our minds.
But who can say that Panopano is not a lonely poor creature. In his world, the outside world is also full of anxiety. There is no familiar person, no familiar feeling. He used brute force to win the applause, and from the applause, he won the steel. Use steel pewter in exchange for food, and use food to sustain life. This is the same as anyone who earns a living from work. The difference is that he has to wander around, no one is interested in watching him perform the trick of breaking the chains with his iron lungs again. He needs an assistant, or rather just a living tool that can beat the drums so that he can hold back his strength and release, and then give him a share of his rice bowl. He doesn't even need this person to fall in love with her, so he doesn't care if this person is male or female. The meaning of a woman, in his world of tricks, may just be something that can make the performance more funny and make the audience laugh more.
It makes sense that Panpano is indifferent to Jessomina. What kind of lofty love do people who live in a mixed life expect!
However, even stones can be useful. If it is useless, then everything is meaningless. Non-vegetation, ruthless Practice makes perfect.
When Panpano missed the death of Lotte's tightrope walker "fool", he was as scared as a child.

Jesomina's loneliness is an unattainable pain of ordinary happiness. In the film, Jessomina is a clown. What is a clown? A clown is a person who demonizes himself and entertains others. Who will entertain the clown's heart? Jesomina is Fellini's own symbol. It is also a symbol of his life in filming clown spirit movies. From the beginning of the film, the clowns under the lens of Fellini appeared one by one, interpreting stories that no one can understand.
At the end of the film, Panpanuo looked around blankly. What did he see?
Nothing, only his own loneliness.
So this man with "iron lungs" cried like Jessomena.

La Strada quotes

  • Zampanò: [reciting his act by rote before a crowd] Here we have a piece of chain that is a quarter of an inch thick. It is made of crude iron, stronger than steel. With the simple expansion of my pectoral muscles, or chest, that is, I'll break the hook.

    [collecting money from the crowd]

Zampanò: Thank you, thank you. Now, to do this feat, I must fill myself up like a tire. If a blood vessel should break, I would spit blood. For instance, in Milan a man weighing 240 pounds lost his eyesight doing this trick. That is because the optical nerves take a beating, and once you lose your eyes, you are finished. If there's any delicate person in the audience, I would advise him to look away 'cause there could be blood.

[with seemingly great effort, he breaks the chain]

  • Gelsomina's Mother: She's not like Rosa. But she's a good girl, poor thing. She'll do what she's told. She just came out a little strange. But, if she eats every day, maybe she'll get better.
