A realist noir, De Niro's Sam, who loves gambling and sees it as a business, is plagued by the betrayal of his wife and friends at its peak, and nearly kills him in a car explosion. Nick, played by Joe Pesci, is violent, ruthless, but simple-minded. Like the character of the thug in "Goodfellas", he is full of foul-mouthed words, solves everything by force, and eventually died of violence from the upper class. He is also a tragic figure.
