I have some questions about the protagonist.
JG did put on a wonderful performance, although I can't fully appreciate how wonderful it is. But why must a person like Louis be the protagonist of the story? Although Louis is more likely to do the things in the film than the average person, this somewhat undercuts the universality of the film's satire. And in the film, only Louis has always broken through the moral and legal bottom line, and other nightcrawlers have not done this, so isn't the meaning of the expression: it is precisely because Louis is a sociopath that these problems occur?
The film's satire of journalism has two layers. The first layer is those directors/producers who only want to show the news that people are most concerned about/feared about, such as shootings, and it’s better to have some conflicts between people of different races and education levels. Through one-sided editing, false background sounds with a tendency to mislead, sensational subtitles, and the anchor's highly instructive repeated emphasis, it attracts people's attention and makes people terrified. The second layer is because of the needs of news producers. In order to get better news materials and sell them at a good price, nightcrawlers constantly break through the bottom line and use various means to achieve their goals.
Because of the existence of the second layer of irony, if the protagonist is replaced by an ordinary smart person (or a smart thief), I think it can achieve better results than now. Like now Louis' revenge on the guard at the beginning, revenge on the buddy who went with him, the threat and use of the heroine, and finally the revenge on his little friend, they are all just manifestations of his psychopathy, not the main story. too much effect.
Another: The film deliberately hides the audience of the news - city residents, and does not reflect the residents' reaction to such news. This might be a good choice, but I'm not sure. But like the speech at the end of Louis, I think it should be cut.
