Solomon Northup was originally a free man, made a living playing the violin, had a wife and two children, and lived a happy life. Unexpectedly, he was deceived by two white men who thought they were the accompaniment of a circus performance. He went to Washington and woke up to find that he had become a black slave. At first he was sold to Mr. Ford as a slave on the estate. It was soon sold to Mr. Epps, known as the "Slave Terminator", who picked cotton day after day on the plantation and witnessed many tragedies of black slaves. Twelve years later, he never gave up his hope of returning to a free man, until he met a progressive man, Mr. Bass, a carpenter. Can Solomon end his fate as a slave?

McQueen is like a magician. He sometimes shifts the narrative angle in space, and sometimes changes the length of time to be detailed. All of these have the most powerful accumulation in the breadth of emotions. The emotions are controlled by the director and the rhythm is sonorous and sad. Joy is no longer my pure feeling, and salvation still cannot prevent the development of human tragedy. Solomon is like this, the world is like this. But as the movie shows, it is an indelible force.

It is not simply the race, the indifference of the same kind, the indifference of human nature, the despair and helplessness of human beings.

12 Years a Slave quotes

  • Clemens: If you want to survive, do and say as little as possible. Tell no one who you really are and tell no one that you can read and write. Unless you want to be a dead nigger.

  • Robert: I say we fight.

Solomon Northup: The crew is fairly small. If it were well planned, I believe they could be strong armed.

Clemens: Three can't stand against a whole crew. The rest here are niggers, born and bred slaves. Niggers ain't got the stomach for a fight, not a damn one.

Robert: All I know, we get where we travelling we'll wish we'd died trying.

Clemens: Survival is not about certain death, it is about keeping your head down.

Solomon Northup: Days ago I was with my family, in my home. Now you tell me all is lost. "Tell no one who I really am" if I want to survive. I don't want to survive, I want to live.
