Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides: How Weakness Is Made

After a four-year hiatus, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has set sail again. As far as the film currently presented to the audience is concerned, it cannot simply be regarded as "something is wrong", but at most it can only be "deja vu and the return of Yan". The lacklustre reception at the Cannes premiere and the declining freshness index on Rotten Tomatoes are all things that any diehard and supporter of Captain Jack would be reluctant to see. The fourth work, which is full of weakness, does not inherit the agility and wit of the first trilogy. Jack is still the captain, but the story has changed beyond recognition. All this, I just want to blame the director and writer.

The storylines of the first trilogy of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series are all original scripts by Disney, and only the outline of the main story in the original book is appropriated. By the time the fourth part was in operation, it had basically relied on the original work, and continued to follow the established route. This is undoubtedly the appearance of cutting corners and Jiang Lang's talents. As a result, it is also obvious that it has caused a disconnect with the core content of the first trilogy, subverting the prototype of the overall story that has long been formed in the minds of the audience. Bold and extremely risky attempts sometimes do not represent superior intelligence, but a reckless disregard for the overall situation. However, the screenwriter has to be stubborn and "the king is hard to bow", pulling a weak clue to link it with the first three parts. Let the audience accept it, the bones are stuck in the throat, and it is difficult to swallow. It's better to directly promote the newly opened trilogy battlefield as a spinoff of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series. On the one hand, Jack's old lover was pulled out, and then the death prophecy was pulled out. In order to save his father, he should have embarked on a journey to find the Fountain of Youth; The captain of the smuggling ship of the British Empire granted the imperial order to follow up Jack's plan together. As a result, the two sides have their own ghosts, and they will not give up until their goals are achieved. Congratulations to the screenwriter for successfully getting rid of the grudge couple who became tasteless in the first trilogy. But after watching the movie, I realized how much I miss them.

The weakness of "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" basically runs through the beginning and the end of the film. The investment has dropped sharply from the original 300 million US dollars to 100 million US dollars, which once again corrects the "how much you can do with your money". And all the truth. I have to admire the screenwriter for being able to interpret this big surprise, but the story with a solid foundation for the small drama, in this way. There are no bright spots or climaxes in the whole film, and the veils of the plain watery strata are lifted. I can hardly come up with a more brilliant gag hilarious bridge, or a fighting scene filled with gunpowder smoke and dripping with air. It should be said that Johnny Depp played as usual, interpreting that unique sultry sissy temperament so well that he couldn't help sweating, at least this soul character didn't lose his soul. The chase scene in London was a small pseudo-climax, and Jack took great pains to make people excited; the scenes of the dense virgin forest were long and boring, far less dramatic than the similar scenes in the second part; the core props—— The ship, with its associated elements displayed, is even more inexplicable. If the pirates escaped from the ship, wouldn't they be bandits?

It was thought that a Penelope Cruz would definitely overshadow the Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley set, but it turns out that the writers once again screwed up. If the newly added characters are not convincing enough, the edges and corners are not clear enough, and there is no eye-catching bridge placement, forcing them to provoke the main character of the protagonist, the foundation is unstable, and it is obviously easy to collapse. The above is also the flaw in Cruz's interpretation of the heroine. In addition, the so-called "love" between her and Jack was both false and true, as if she was playing tricks and didn't call at all. The creation of this character ended in failure. The little missionary and the mermaid in the film, the emotional entanglement between them is quite successful. While stunned by the stunning mermaid's shape, I was also deeply attracted by this transcendent true love. This is precisely the biggest incentive for me to look forward to the fifth part. It seems to be somewhat ironic and unintentional.

The story of the first trilogy belongs to the "three cores", that is, there are three cores - Captain Jack, the mandarin ducks who are on and off, and David Jones, the captain of the Flying Dutchman. Such a three-legged confrontation can play the role of highlighting and foiling, making the plot of each area fully integrated, which is impressive. But by the fourth part, it has degenerated into a "one core" - it runs directly with Jack as the center. Of course, it can be said that this is to trust Johnny Depp's acting skills and appeal, but safflower must be accompanied by green leaves. Moreover, the single-line narrative also narrows the overall perspective that the audience can feel, weakens the suspense of the film, and makes the plot appear weak and weak. Originally, it seemed to complement each other vigorously, but now it has become a lonely emptiness like a one-man show. If I just use the easter eggs after the subtitles as a foreshadowing, I really have no desire to look forward to the fifth part.

In fact, the biggest "highlight" presented by this film is the long and bloated. The full 130-minute film length can actually cut out about 20 minutes of redundant scenes. No one wants to see Jack having another chatter label. This is as good as "Iron Man 2". . Although in the name of true 3D, except for the mermaid battle in the middle, and the knife frequently pointed to the screen on the Queen Anne's Revenge, the other pictures are still fake 3D, which is better than nothing. Last year's "Resident Evil 4" was also true 3D, but the effect was surprisingly good, it really can't explain it. Weakness in sequels is normal in a franchise. "Death is Coming 4", "The Lord of the Rings 2", "Monster Street 3, 4, 5", "Terminator 4", etc., are all people who have come back from different paths. However, the rise again after the weakness will be what everyone expects and what the people want. A good work should stand up to the trials and tribulations. We have enough reasons to believe that as long as Jack is still there, the Pirates of the Caribbean series will definitely have a bright future. But take a step back and speak, if the rotten wood cannot be carved, and it continues to be weak and decadent, it is better to stop in moderation, retire to enjoy the happiness of the family, and leave all the good things in the past to memories.
