The first time I watched it, I was curious. Before I finally hit the road, Rust explained it to the bar owner in ten copies and sent it to the FBI, the Criminal Investigation Division, the prosecutor, the attorney general, newspapers and TV stations. Large envelopes In addition to listing the evidence and materials they have collected, will there be an explanation?
"True Detective" is a favorite work in my heart. After a lapse of 6 years, I replayed it for the Nth time. When the ending song sounded, I was still a little reluctant to give up. Only then did I realize that it was time to write something. This article can be regarded as a summary for Rust and Marty. It is a record of watching the drama 6 years late, and it can also be regarded as an attempt to unravel my own knot. As Rust said: A man never forgets what he owes.

Presumably you will still remember the Dora Lange murder in Louisiana in 1995, when the case was dubbed the "mystery ritual murder" by the media. The suspect, Reggie Ledoux, was shot dead in a shootout with police. The evidence recovered from the scene, as well as the rescued two missing children, all point to the fact that Reggie Ledoux is the murderer of Dora.
Happy ending.
The murderer has been eliminated and justice has been served. Everyone thinks so.
But that might not be the case.
In order to prove that my words are not alarmist, I will tell the story below.
Things started 22 years ago.
In 1990, then-Iberia District Sheriff Steve Geraci received a teenage missing person report for a 10-year-old girl named Marie Fontenot. But when Steve Geraci turned back to investigate the case, he found that the report had been marked "incorrect", so he went to question his superior, Sheriff Ted Childress. The mark was annotated by the sheriff, who said he knew the girl's parents and knew the ins and outs of the matter, and the report was unnecessary. The matter is over.
Time comes to 1995.
On January 3, the Louisiana Bureau of Criminal Investigation received a request for support from the sheriff of Vermilion Parish—the body of an unidentified woman was found in a sugar cane field outside the town of Erath.
Two detectives, Rust Cohle and Marty Hart, then detectives from the Criminal Investigation Bureau, were ordered to the scene.
The corpse was naked, blindfolded, with both hands tied with hemp ropes, facing a big tree in a kneeling posture. There is a pattern similar to a "spiral" on the back of the corpse (Cthulhu?), and a crown is worn on the head, which is made of antlers, thorn branches and other items. There are also some decorations made of thorn branches. The appearance of weird corpses, mysterious patterns, antlers, and accessories with some witchcraft hints made the media at that time dubbed the case "mysterious ritual murder case", a somewhat alarmist name.
Two detectives launched an investigation. They found some trivial clues: Dora had meth residue in her body, multiple cuts on the outside of her skin, and had been abused before she died; Dora was a prostitute, and several prostitutes knew her but didn't know her well; Dora had drug use Shi, whose ex-husband's name is Charlie, is in jail. There's also some seemingly unrelated information: a missing girl years ago, a green-eared monster chasing a little girl, a ridiculous sketch, etc.; all information is dead end.
Just when the investigation of the case was in trouble, Billy Lee Tuttle, a pastor active in Louisiana with religious and charitable causes, came to the police station and expressed his concerns about the Dora case, and even said whether a special operations team could be set up to take over the case. 's investigation. As we all know, B.Tuttle is the cousin of then Louisiana Governor Edwin Tuttle. Can his words represent the governor's intention?
You must remember Marie Fontenot mentioned at the beginning of this article. Rust and Marty first heard her name during the investigation, the girl who disappeared years ago. They go to the home where Marie Fontenot lived before she disappeared, the home of former Louisiana State University pitcher Danny Fontenot, Marie Fontenot's uncle who has suffered a stroke and looks troubling. Marty and Danny chatted a little, and Marie Fontenot's disappearance doesn't seem to have anything to do with Dora's case, but Rust found an item in the corner of the yard that also appeared at the Dora murder scene - a thorn branch ornament.
Was this thorn ornament some sort of signature-like sign left by the killer? Was it the same person who kidnapped Marie Fontenot and killed Dora?
The investigation continues. Rust and Marty are like partners in traditional detective dramas, one red and one white. Rust seems to be saddled with some kind of knot, withdrawn, condescending, focused, and willing to be violent; Marty is alert, slick, stoic, evenly dealing with everything in front of her: work, family, and a custard lover. Of course, these are all off-topic. The two detectives followed the church and prostitution camp. They found a mural on the wall of the abandoned church - the painting was very similar to Dora's death. Someone in the church once witnessed a burly man with burn scars on his face. Appeared with Dora. Detectives decided to hunt the tall, scarred man across the country. They found one or two, but neither was clearly their target. time is limited. Remember Pastor B. Tuttle's concerns? A special investigation team is ready to take on the case.
Rust is not affected by any special operations team, and his attention is now on the vast old file. A 1992 case of the drowning death of a young girl caught Rust's attention. The girl who died was named Rianna Oliver, 22 years old. She had multiple wounds and methamphetamine residues in her body. The most important thing was that her body had a spiral pattern similar to Dora's back. One is drowning, one is homicide, will there be a connection between the two cases? Rust gets two pieces of information. First, the school Rianna attended was Light of way, the same school that Marie Fontenot, a girl who disappeared in 1990, attended. The school was one of the schools funded by Pastor B. Tuttle's foundation. It was closed after Hurricane Andrew in 1992. The second message was a name: Reggie Ledoux.
Reggie Ledoux, with numerous criminal records, rape, drug manufacture, and on the run on bail, was roommate with Dora Lange's ex-husband Charlie during his time at Avoyelles prison. Reggie mentioned to Charlie some kind of demon worship with children as sacrifices, involving powerful people, and he also mentioned a place called Carcosa, where a man named "Yellow Robe" The king of "King" (Cthulhu?), the spiral totem is their symbol.
Meth, demon worship, Dora's ex-husband's roommate, spiral pattern, parole on the run. Need more tips?
The process of tracking Reggie is not shown for now, and the ending has been explained at the beginning of this article. In short, the case is solved. But at that time, did anyone ever think that there were no burn scars on Reggie's face, so who was the burly man with scars? Why was Pastor B. Tuttle eager to intervene in the case? Where is Marie Fontenot? Does her disappearance have anything to do with Reggie? Has the weapon that killed Dora been found? But Reggie is dead, and these questions may never be answered. Probably no one will care about these details, the murderer was killed, right? Everyone is happy, everyone is satisfied. Marty gets a promotion, his wife forgives him for the affair; Rust seems to let go of his past and start a new life, and everything is back on track.
until 2002.
A homicide suspect in Livingston confided a message in desperation: the real murderer of the 1995 Dora Lange murder was not Reggie Ledoux, but someone else, who is not only still at large, but also has a big shot behind him. its taken care of. Rust doesn't believe him, he's desperate to jump over the wall, let alone a cornered murderer. But when the word "King in Yellow Robe" was spat out of his mouth, something in Rust's memory revived, the unsolved mysteries of the year - Carcosa, Marie Fontenot, the scarred man... Just as Rust intends to go further While interrogating the prisoner, he committed suicide in prison.
Don't you think the plot is a bit old-fashioned? Murder and silence, doesn't this mean that the truth of what the murderer said is true? At the same time, does it also expose the existence of some figures with one hand covering the sky?
No one wants to listen to Rust's wild guesswork. Take it easy, look forward, that's mainstream thinking. Besides, Marty has so many things to take care of—a wife, a rebellious daughter, a fat body, thinning hair, and maybe a desire to reshape her looks. No one supports Rust, but no one can stop him. Rust's investigation process will not be repeated much, but only some of the results are listed below:
—Childress, one of the guards guarding the suspect who died by suicide, shares the surname of Sheriff Ted Childress in the disappearance of Marie Fontenot.
- The thorn bar ornament was also found in Light of the way, closed in 1992, at the school where Marie Fontenot and Rianna Oliver attended.
——The girl who was rescued from Reggie Ledoux, although her mental state was questionable, she confirmed the existence of a tall man with a scar on his face.
——In the seminary where B. Tuttle was the dean, a student had stumbled upon pictures of naked children, and the student’s superior, the associate dean Austin Farrar, promised to investigate the matter, but was later charged with corruption Internally fired, allegedly addicted to alcohol, and died shortly after.
- Pastor B. Tuttle's church has a charitable project called "Siyuan Project", which aims to provide teaching funds for schools in some rural areas. Light of way is one of the schools that have been funded. In addition, rumours of child sexual abuse have been exposed in schools sponsored by the program, which have since been dismissed.
Anyone with a fairly normal mind who can sit down and ponder the information can see that there is something wrong with B.Tuttle. It's a pity that everything was not on the right track at that time, the weather, the location, the people, everything was wrong.
Rust left the police station and returned to Alaska. He didn't care about the world, and lived a life of "fishing for the cold river and snow alone, and dreaming over the galaxy", at least on the surface. What about Marty? Apparently, the things that would allow him to "evenly distribute" are moving away from him.
The time has come to 2012. Marty has long since left the police station and is working alone as a private detective. Rust, who worked as a bartender at a small roadside bar, was half-soaked all day and returned to Louisiana two years ago. This year, there was a murder on the banks of Charles Lake. The scene of the crime was very similar to the Dora Lange murder of that year - naked female corpse, antlers and crowns, religious elements. This time, Rust turned out to be the focus of the police's suspicion. But this is not surprising. A person reappeared after many years, and the case followed. Besides, this person was talking about the universe, stars, and reincarnation, making him look like Nietzsche. Anti-social, anti-religious impression. Wasn't every step of the investigation of that case progressed under his guidance? Could it not be possible that he had deliberately led this way for some hidden purpose? Even Marty didn't dare to say otherwise.
Marty's misgivings were unraveled by the material Rust showed—especially the videotape—the result of two years of Rust's own investigation:
- All cases of disappearance of women and children occurred within a 16km radius of the schools (14 in total) assisted by the B.Tuttle Foundation.
——In 1988, a kindergarten (the Shepherd's House) built by Tuttle was accused of sexually abusing young children, and the kindergarten closed immediately. Two years later, the kindergarten reopened on Pecican Island under the name Light of way,
- One of the 16 children enrolled in Light of way that year - let's call him Jonny. Jonny recalled the situation at that time. At that time, he often had a kind of dream, he dreamed that he was in a state of half awake, his body could not move, and there were many adults wearing animal masks around taking pictures of him with cameras, or doing something else matter. At one point a few people were not wearing masks, and he remembered one man with scars all over his chin. Jonny later heard similar memories to him from a girl whose name appeared to be Marie Fontenot.
- in a small town near Erath - also the birthplace of the Tuttle family, there is a custom, mixed with several exotic religions, in the annual winter festival, there will be some rustic activities, animal masks, Antlers, blindfolds, thorn artifacts and more are common elements at this event.
The conclusion is not difficult to infer: the murderer, the scarred man, and the Tuttle family and Reggie Ledoux must know each other, even if they are not inextricably linked.
If a man has a debt, he will pay it back, and Rust will no longer ignore it. This is also a hurdle he must overcome spiritually. What about Marty? Maybe he needs a little ripple in his stagnant life. Fortunately, this time they had nothing to worry about, and they were desperate.
The main body of the investigation is identification and location, reviewing old documents, and interviewing people related to the Tuttle family. Who is the scarred man? What the heck is "Carcosa"? The truth has always been hidden in the darkness, hidden in the depths of Louisiana's vast swamps.
There is a Chinese poem that says it well: the mountains and rivers are exhausted, there is no way, and there is another village in the dark. There was a sudden connection between the ridiculous sketch from more than ten years ago and a freshly painted house on the side of the road, and the target's whereabouts were about to be revealed. Maybe you will question, is it so effortless and without warning? Just like some anticlimactic suspense dramas, the beginning is too big, but then it is found that the plot gradually tends to be unable to end, so I can only open my eyes and end it hastily. Has the meaning of all previous investigations been wiped out by this accidental flash of inspiration? If so, why didn't they notice it 17 years ago? Perhaps this is the so-called qualitative change caused by quantitative change. Without the previous accumulation, without the information imprinted in the mind and the pictures that flashed in front of the eyes, where does the flash of inspiration come from?
William Lee Childress, this is the real murderer - I'm not sure if that's the name of him. Now that we have names and addresses, all mysteries can be solved by finding William Lee Childress, "Carcosa", Marie Fontenot, the secret of the Tuttle family.
hope so.
PS.
Please note that the contents of the enclosed video tape may cause discomfort to the viewer.
The source of the tape is not disclosed here, but it is clear that Pastor Billy Tuttle died mysteriously shortly after the tape was discovered, allegedly from a heart attack. A similar way of dying appears many times in a Japanese manga called "Death Note," but in that manga, the truth of death is often up for debate.
Another attached picture. You may be able to get a glimpse of the relationship between the Tuttle family, the Childress family and the Lebeau family.
