Synopsis
Black guy Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) falls in love with white girl Ruth (Alison Williams) .
After 4 sweet months together, Ruth decides to bring Chris home as a guest.
Chris was worried about whether a white family would accept him.
But because he loved this kind girl very much, he hurriedly packed his bags and prepared to go on the road.
The road was not all smooth sailing. Ruth accidentally hit a deer while driving, and Ruth had a little friction with the police officer who came to deal with the accident.
Fortunately, both of them were fine and arrived at Ruth's house smoothly.
Ruth's parents came out to greet them in person, looking very friendly , and Chris's heart was half dropped.
But Chris finds that Ruth's black maid Georgina (Betty Gabriel) looks strange.
Whether it is speaking or acting, it is very mechanical, as if being hypnotized.
But he was a guest after all, so he was embarrassed to ask why.
At night, Chris, who couldn't sleep, wanted to smoke outside the house, and happened to bump into Ruth's mother who had not rested.
The two chatted, and after a while, Chris found that his body suddenly couldn't move .
Then the whole person is like falling into a deep pit , unable to break free and unable to make a sound.
He was very frightened, struggled desperately, and finally sat up on the bed, it turned out to be just a dream.
The next day, there was a party at Ruth's house, and a lot of people came.
Chris turned around and finally found a black man. He hurried forward to say hello as if he had met his own brother.
But the black man gave him the same feeling as the maid Georgina.
His movements were slow, his expressions stiff and lifeless.
Chris, who loves photography, wanted to take this picture.
But the moment the photo was taken, the black man had a nosebleed .
He screamed and lunged at Chris, shouting, "Get out" ...
Video Analysis
"Escape from the Dead" is a leader in the thriller genre in recent years. The form, content and production of the film are excellent, the rhythm is controlled, the atmosphere is created, and the details are laid out freely. No wonder To win the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay is a remarkable achievement for a thriller.
"Racism" has always been a topic that has been widely mentioned in movies, and after so many years, it is still common in today's society. People in the same place will have prejudice because of differences in living habits, not to mention other races with huge differences in body structure and regional culture? The following content contains some spoilers, it is recommended to read the movie after watching the movie.
In the film, black people are portrayed as symbols of "power" , with outstanding physical conditions and strong physiques. For example, Ruth's father was talking to Chris about her grandfather's loss to black people in the track and field, such as the black gardener repeatedly showing his strength, running, chopping wood, etc. And what about white people? It is portrayed as a symbol of "wisdom" . For example, Ruth's father is proficient in surgery, her mother is a psychiatrist who is good at hypnotism, and Ruth used a scheme to deceive black people into taking the bait.
In the eyes of Ruth's family, black people have strong limbs and simple minds, and they are no different from animals. When Chris first arrived at Ruth's house, Ruth's father mentioned deer, to the effect that it is not a pity for a deer to die. Combining the front and back of the film, the metaphor of deer is black , which means that the director told us from the beginning that this family is an extreme racist .
So they want to equip such a simple-minded animal with intelligent brains to achieve the perfect combination of power and intelligence. However, in the subsequent plots, we found that black people are not what they imagined. When the blind artist selected Chris, we knew that he was not looking for his body, but for his eyes that were good at discovering art. And Chris's friend is proof that not all black people are easily fooled.
At the end of the film, because of his kindness and guilt for his mother's death, Chris finally couldn't bear to attack Ruth, but Ruth showed an evil smile because of her trickery, so is the film trying to show that blacks are higher than whites? of course not. I think what the director wants to express is that it is not skin color or wealth that determines the level of human beings, but human nature.
There is no such thing as three, six or nine. If you have to distinguish between superior and inferior, human nature is the only measure.
