Faith - Religion and Desire

Oil, also known as "industrial blood", like gold symbolizes wealth and power. Whether it is the witty and ironic Chaplin in "The Gold Rush" or "The Valley of Gold" in "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs", they all describe the madness of that era, or the madness of that era. Manifestations. At the same time, oil is viscous and rare and precious, just like the blood of the human body, undercurrents surging under its unpretentious appearance, no one knows where the treasures will be hidden or who will spread the blood.

Blood appears three times in the film, the first under the initial small-scale oil well. At the beginning, all the participants were similar. Daniel was also a hot-blooded young man at the time. Some movie introductions say that Daniel used H.W to deceive the villagers, which I think is irresponsible. The mine friend had an accident and left a child. Daniel probably didn't worry too much at that time. He was lonely and unmarried for a long time, and he also expected someone to accompany him (just like he wanted to keep his younger brother in the back). When he was not developed, he also did his best to treat his son. He had made a lot of efforts for his son's deafness. Of course, it was full of reluctance to send his son on the train. The blood at this time symbolizes the original intention of young people to strive for progress, and even willing to risk their lives for a better and happy life. But his son's deafness is also a watershed. After Daniel rescued H.W., he went to the so-called firefighting, but anyone with a little common sense knows that water can't save oil fires, not to mention he is a professional. He just went to appreciate and protect his wealth. Before the unprecedented huge oil field, Daniel began to walk towards the road of no return to abandoning his family.

The second time was when Daniel shot the fake brother. Just as Daniel judges himself, his sense of competition is detached from ordinary people, and he also isolates himself from ordinary people, so he can also identify the fake brother through the details. Looking back at HW's arson, I don't know if it was because I found clues from the photos in my brother's diary, and everything disappeared in HW's silence. Daniel has achieved great success, and both subjectively and objectively have surpassed others. That poor Mr. Tiff (who originally intended to acquire Daniel's land) was just a cannon fodder. He was attacked by Daniel's imaginary family education theory. How could Daniel be? Give up your hard-earned wealth? The ugliness of religion broke out at the same time. Father Bandy discovered Daniel's murder, but just wanted him to be baptized. What's even more ridiculous is that the content of the baptism confession was actually abandoning his son, and the ugliness showed a new height in the newly built church.

The third time was, of course, Daniel's mansion. Daniel pronounced Eli's death in Eli's way, and he played God himself, causing the menacing Eli to fall to his knees completely. Recalling that Eli slapped Daniel as a priest in the church, this magical contrast made the drama and reality a perfect combination, and also connected with a series of Eli's ugly faces: the negotiation at the dinner table when Daniel first arrived at Sand Ranch, Daniel's request before drilling, the bizarre performance in the church, the madness of going home after being knocked down by Daniel... Daniel has also completed one of his previous visions - leaving everyone, he drove away the only relative, and stuck to himself castle. He doesn't need to go to the oil well anymore, and quietly transformed his young blood into oil in the past 30 years, so that no one else can take away his wealth, and his son is no exception. In the end, he and the oil are one and the same, regardless of each other.

In general, this weird (music) and dark (picture) film goes a bit off the beaten path, mocking and criticizing everything it brings, telling about the oil at the beginning of the last century, but all of it is in line with the present.

All people have faith, some people believe in what others have given, and some people believe in what they have created. Think about how the farmers of Sand Ranch with little knowledge and limited knowledge could survive the good life that Daniel promised them? Or not convinced by Eli's ecstatic performance of exorcism? In ancient China, if you don't have faith, you will have faith. Confucianism or the call to rise up is a highly contagious shackle or weapon. In modern times, statistically, there are a lot of Chinese people who believe in Buddhism, but I think this kind of letter is a kind of solicitation letter: Look at the people who usually burn incense and worship Buddha to ask for the safety of their children, but rarely hear about the use of Buddhism. Moral standards are self-required; people who burn incense and ring bells for a fee, and masters consecrate and ask for talismans, is this money also collected by the Buddha; monks and Taoists recruit high-level education, and at the same time indicate the content that can be accepted into the world, it seems to have become a new profession. Instead of meditating for preaching... Whether it's inside the temple or the noise of dust, the door is open to ask for it, and the hermit almost becomes an addict. This does not respect national borders. The godfathers revealed in "Focus" are using the beliefs and forbearance of the masses to conduct private leaks of desires! Of course, there must be very devout believers, but it is destined to become less and less, because the living conditions are better, the candlesticks in "Les Miserables" seem to be extinct, and the rich material conditions divert the attention of ordinary people. Whether it is the core of film and television works to ridicule, or the focus of discussion in the small intestine, there are no exceptions. The injection of capital has made the original rustic style no longer. Today, more faith and trust are concentrated on material wealth. You never stress how to button up in front of a group of people who have already buttoned the first button in your life? The watered-down religious system that has emerged in China (kowtowing to the yuan even if it is lively) gives me reason to believe in Marx’s prophecy of the disappearance of religious belief in a communist society (certainly not in a complementary relationship with material desires). It is true that I can't deny the positive role and influence of religion in today's world. Doesn't capitalism also make the United States temporarily the world's number one brother?

Desire must outlive religion. There is no doubt that religion also arises from man, and man is afraid that he grows out of desire. On the other hand, if you don’t want to go to the extreme of Daniel, I don’t know if Paul is a method, not greedy, but who can guarantee his future path?
