Even Ruth's attitude towards people is extremely guarded and a bit offensive. Magnis initially respected the old general, but allowed him to be killed and stole his clothes.
Well, the Hateful Eight doesn't actually include the old general, but the elder brother hidden under the floor. The old general is the introduction of the story, depicting other characters, giving a suitable time to poison, just a part of the story.
