As a story that is supposed to consist of both the trapped and the rescuer, the film clearly focuses on rescue. The idea of concocting a lie as a cover-up through Hollywood and the media is obviously far more worthy of attention than the generally conceivable nervousness of the trapped people. Even at the time, Mendez's plan was deviant and absurd. Feasibility and absurdity coexist, injecting a lighthearted tone into what can be a heavy narrative.
