Regarding this historical event, the high school history book did not describe it. Instead, it vividly portrayed the Normandy landing four years later. Therefore, many people did not understand this great retreat (history teacher: I really can't blame me). Of course, everyone likes the story of victory, and the inglorious thing of routing and escaping is not attractive at all. But it was this great retreat that retained more than 300,000 troops for Britain and laid the foundation for the Normandy landings. Many soldiers who survived their lives on the beaches of Dunkirk were the latest to set foot on German soil in Normandy four years later, and they were finally disgraced. Therefore, the strategic significance of this great retreat is enormous and cannot be described as simply "disgraceful".
1. One week, one day, one hour
Nolan is amazing, and there is no shortage of people to praise him - after all, he is a man who can circle the earth N circles hand in hand with a diehard fan - his lens language and editing (but on editing I It is still the best David Fincher) is first-class, I will not go into details, focus on the multi-line narrative this time.
I haven't seen many of Nolan's works, except for a few more famous ones, such as "Inception", "Interstellar", "Deadly Magic" and so on. This is the first time I have seen him use a multi-line narrative method. Of course, if he has used it in other works, it can only be said that I have not seen it. Three lines, three periods of time of different lengths, are displayed side by side, and finally come together, without any confusion, it can be said to be very clean and neat. I personally like multi-line narratives very much. Being able to piece together multi-line well and finally combine them without confusion is a test of the director's skills. Therefore, I like "Game of Thrones" very much, and I personally think that multi-line is the best. Alright, it's BBC's "Crazy City", I personally recommend it to everyone here, it's the screenwriter of "Secret No. 9".
Farther away, let’s get down to business. Some people say that this movie is very suspenseful and stealthy, but I disagree. The camera language and narrative style are indeed Nolan, but you say this is suspense? Where is the suspicion? Suspended is quite dangling. The whole film is in an anxious and tense atmosphere, which keeps the viewers in a constant state of mind. They can't help worrying about the soldiers. Run away, the enemy planes are coming again. This kind of atmosphere is shaped, and BGM is indispensable. I remember a scene where the protagonist and others were discussing when the tide was rising on the beach. At this time, the BGM also fell together, rising heavily and falling lightly, just like a rushing tide, which properly grabbed the viewer. (But this BGM seems to be a bit similar to "Inception", I don't know if it was directly used in Inception).
2. Afternoon!
Another great thing about Nolan is actually reflected in casting and character characterization. Even an inexperienced rookie actor can be trained by him in acting skills. Among the characters in this film, I like the Air Force played by Jack Lowden the most. Afternoon can be said to have countless fans. The actor himself is active in the drama circle, and has starred in the British drama "War and Peace", and his acting skills have passed the test. In the movie, the fuselage made an emergency landing on the sea, and after being rescued, the first sentence he said to the person who rescued him was: "Afternoon!"
Ordinary people, after experiencing flooded cabins, broken windows, no doors, and almost despair, Then after the ups and downs such as the twists and turns and the rest of your life, what might you say? He may say thank you to the rescuer, or he may draw a cross on his chest and say thank the God. But when he was still in the water and just grabbed the life-saving rope, he actually greeted people good afternoon? With a touch of politeness and banter, even a little playful. I really can't help but sigh, the British really live the gentleman's set into their bones, even in the juncture of life and death, they will not forget it. In "Downton Abbey", even in times of war, the etiquette of eating can't be messed up. Although some simplifications have been made due to the reduction of personnel, the placement of the spoons must not go wrong. Women need to learn how to be a lady, and men can't forget how to be a gentleman. This somewhat rigid and cute attribute that is unique to the British is fully reflected in the sentence "afternoon", and it has to be accepted.
Digression: I'm going to make up for "War and Peace", for my new wall :)
3. "What do you see?" "Home."
This lieutenant played by Kenneth Branagh is a facial expression performance in the whole film. The best person (it should have been Mr. Tang, but he covered his face the whole time). On the beach, we can actually tell how things are going by looking at his expression. When the ship was hit by enemy planes and the soldiers abandoned the ship and fled, his brows were furrowed and his mouth was firmly closed; at this time, when he looked up at the sky, his eyes slowly opened wide and his face When the facial features are more tense, we can all know without the need to switch to the sky, oh, the enemy plane is coming again; when there are many ships floating in the distance, he first looks a little puzzled and a little expectant, picks up the binoculars and takes a look After taking off the telescope, his eyes were already bent and his mouth was open. It could be said that he was overjoyed. At this time, we didn't have to wait for the camera to switch to the sea. We can also know that, oh, the rescue ship has arrived. Others asked him: "What do you see?"
"Home." His face was already swept away, full of hope.
What is commendable is that this old actor is actually the director of "Thor". It can be seen that his academic skills are also used in "Thor". It is no wonder that the court drama in "Thor" has the shadow of Shakespeare.
4. "We are going to the war, George." The
young George, only 17 years old, followed the captain across the strait with enthusiasm to pick up his own soldiers home. Before reaching Dunkirk, he died on the ship. "I might still be able to get into the newspaper." He looked expectant and immature. In the end, he did appear in the newspaper, but he couldn't see it.
Why portray such a character who has nothing to do with the Great Retreat? He did not die to save the soldiers, but was pushed down the stairs by emotionally charged national soldiers suffering from bombing phobia. I think it's probably because of the captain's words - "People our age have gone to war, why should these young people suffer?"
In war, most people are pushed away. Just like the male protagonist (who has no name), he just wants to go home, do you think he wants to fight? Those soldiers who subconsciously hugged their heads and squatted down when they saw enemy planes, do they want to fight? George, kind and innocent, would he want to fight after witnessing the cruelty of real war?
Some felt that Nolan was wrong to paint a disgraceful debacle so great. However, the tone of the whole film is not great at all. We watched it, and we just thought, oh, war is so terrible, let's not fight it. How innocently a young man like George died, we wonder how well he would have lived without the war. It has been said that the best war movies are all anti-war. It is precisely because of this that "Hacksaw Ridge" will be nominated for an Oscar, and "Saving Private Ryan" can become a classic even if it promotes the main theme. Once the war starts, how can there be winners or losers? Both are losers. You said that China won the Anti-Japanese War, and China's losses were smaller than Japan's? There are 300,000 wronged souls in Nanjing alone. You said that World War II was indeed won by the anti-fascists. Can the Jews who died in vain in the concentration camps survive? The only way to win a war is not to happen. Therefore, we are anti-war now, that is, to maintain the hard-won peace. Those people who clamor for "those who violate China will be punished even if they are far away", you ask them to go to the battlefield to "kill" themselves, are they willing? Know how many people will die and how many families will be broken once the war begins?
When "Dunkirk" was released in China, some people boycotted and felt that domestic films like "Wolf Warrior 2" should be supported. Some people retorted that "Wolf Warrior 2" provoked populism and made everyone feel how wise it is to fight a war One thing about Shenwu, so boycotting "Dunkirk" is a terrible momentum. First of all, I think that "Wolf Warrior 2" is not a war movie at all. People talk about the evacuation of overseas Chinese, which is different from the strategic evacuation of Dunkirk. There is no comparison at all. Secondly, "Wolf Warrior 2" has indeed aroused the patriotic blood of many people, but this passion should not be used to boycott foreign films. In the era of globalization, working behind closed doors will only bring about its own demise. Some people have no reason and judgment at all, and feel that patriotism should sacrifice their lives for the country and throw their heads and blood. Those who sacrificed for the country are of course worthy of respect, but have you ever thought that the real patriotism is to let them not have to sacrifice their lives for the country, to make their country a better place, not to think about printing and attacking Japan every day, and choosing The party that starts the war, no matter how just the reason, is unjust. In a war, how can there be a winner? ? When a country falls into war, everyone, like the protagonist in the movie, will be pushed into the vortex of war, unable to help themselves and their lives.
Finally, take a mouthful of poisonous milk, and wish the world peace.
